It is one of several medals struck to commemorate events sponsored by P.S. Gilmore in Boston a decade after the Civil War. The original event was called the National Peace Jubilee and was first held in 1869. Gilmore issued several smaller (28mm) pieces advertising this event (Rulau Ma-Bo-68 & 69). It must have been somewhat successful since he expanded it to a World Peace Jubilee by 1872. A quick search of World Peace Jubilee 1872 on Google turns up a myriad of background material.
