Is there a way to put an alert on a PCGS coin that was stolen during shipping?
I sold an 1886 $ PCGS MS65DMPL on ebay. The buyer says when he opened package it was empty. He had signed for it and did not notice the other end of the box had the tape cut. It is PCGS #39430829. It is a pretty nice coin that could be recognized if someone was looking at the PCGS pic.
Is there a way to add to the PCGS item the fact that it was stolen?

start a registry set called 'stolen coin in shipping' and add the coin to that set. If anyone checks cert, they will see it is in that registry set.
make sure you file with the USPS inspector general
possibly a police report?A few years ago, I bought a coin and when checking I got 'invalid cert'. I started the process of getting fixed and after a few weeks, they told me it had been reported stolen and return to where I bought it for refund .... I am not sure what owner did to have PCGS do that.

Contact PCGS customer service and NCIC. PCGS will flag the listing as not valid.

Need to file a police report ... as I learned PCGS will not note it unless they have evidence it was reported stolen. I think the same for the numistnatic Crime site

I would just add the coin and the cert# to one of your sets. If/when someone tries to register it you will be notified to remove it. When/if that happens you can then reach out to PCGS and tell them that the coin was stolen and have them report to the police who was trying to register it and also report it to NCIC.

An update on this theft. I sent a second package through the same post office at the same time of day months later to get graded across the street to get an error designation on three already slabbed 1891 quarters. When the package did arrive it was empty. They were able to contact me because I had return address which matched my account. This made it clear where an when my dollar was stolen. I went on ebay and got lucky and spotted one of my coins and realized I know someone who works at the coin shop. They had all three of my quarters. I quickly called ant they took it down and held the others for me. The postal inspector general is involved because it is clearly a postal employee stealing from the packages. Hopefully soon we will see the arrest of someone there. The errors on all three of the quarters is the misplaced date in the denticles. The nicest is MS66. I had spent about 10 years hunting for these coins. They are very rare. I will post when I here more from the inspector general. I did add the stolen dollar to a set with the note saying stolen as was recommended. I would not be surprised if it was also sold to the same post office.
I did have to buy back the three stolen quarters from the coin shop at the price they paid the thief. But at least I do have them back.

USPS Internal theft is running rampant as I said in a previous Post. Its out of control literally. Just had another gold coin stolen yesterday , and week ago, and so on and so on

Once signed for, USPS will not consider there to be a theft and therefore will honor no claim. Always check that your package shows no sign of tampering before signing for it. If tampered, refuse delivery and have USPS return to sender and inform the sender.

If the coin shop knows how much they paid, probably know who they bought it from. I hope they get the postal employee.

I could be wrong, but I believe that if the coins were on record with the PD as stolen then the coin shop would have been out the money if they bought stolen coins. I'm not sure you would have needed to buy them back.

The coin shop bought them from the thief before I even knew they were stolen. So they would have had no idea they were stolen. The coin shop did pay the seller with a check so the Inspector General should have an easy time tracking them down. It sounded like the Inspector thought they would be able to solve a lot of mail issues at this PO now. I am hoping I do get a reward for basically spoon feeding them all the info to catch the thief.

I had a package from a forum member with 2 raw large cents, sent in a manila envelope.
I signed for it AT the post office. I walked about 30ft away and opened it, anxious to see the coins, as the pics were nice.
Only 1 was in there. At that time, I turned it over and over to examine the envelope. There was a very hard to see, thin slice in the back. A coin had fallen out or been taken out from that.I walked right back in, less than 2 minutes after signing, showed the clerk and we filled out the forms.
Fellow forum member was reimbursed (as was I by him) but the coin was lost to both of us
So, you can sign for it, but open it immediately, and you should be ok.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I hate thieves and I hate people who blindly turn an eye to them. You didn't turn away but tackled it headon!I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
