Fortin plate coin?
I wish I knew how to do all the computer voodoo where pictures and what not are linked but I think I just made an odd discovery.
Recently I won a coin at Great Collections. It is the last 1838 Seated Dime to be found in the archives from this weeks auction. The coin is in a PCGS VF 25 holder but does not say it is an 1838 Fortin 106A.
However it has the correct die cracks and what not for that variety. Here is the thing. PCGS does not show ANY 1838 coins in their census with this designation.
Go to the Fortin reference site and the reference coin is listed as a PCGS VF 25. It is hard to do because of the sizes of the Fortin online pictures, but I swear there are several nicks and scratches, (in particular on the reverse) that match both coins. I had heard that he was going to be selling off his reference coins but would he really do so through Great Collections? James

Gerry is selling his collection through his own GFRC Online Auctions portal. There will be three sessions, in January, March, and May 2025. I believe many of the reference collection coins had already been sold. The upcoming auctions feature his "good stuff".

Unless ordering a coin, he does not answer e-mails. At least not mine. James
He always answers when I call.

I hope that is a business phone. You wouldn't want to be putting personal numbers out there. Also, know this. I lay no claim to beings friends or anything else with the fellow. Likewise, he does not know me or owe me any of his time. Personally I expect to solve this particular question the day I get the coin in hand. i just thought it odd he might be using Great Collections for sales. Still do. would think adding provenance would be a plus. James
No worries. This number is posted on his website.

He has been selling Seated Dime variety plate coins on his site for several years.
So the December 2024 coin on Great Collections could have been owned by someone who bought it from Gerry previously.

Fortin F-106a plate coin
On the plate coin, I see a scratch/gouge on Ms. Liberty's upper right arm (viewer's left) which is not present on your coin.
Also, scratches on the rock and below ME on your coin which are not present on the plate coin.
So I don't think yours is the Fortin plate coin.
The GFRC Sales Archive shows 2 1838 F-106a VF25 coins sold in 2014. They do not have photos.
So the VF25 grade is likely not unique for this variety.
A very cool bisecting die crack on this variety!
Clearly not the same coin.
@yosclimber . Thanks for the post and the pics. james
If you haven’t already done so, you might want to Google copying and pasting links and images - I bet it’s not nearly as difficult as you might think.

Actually, at the moment I am trying to master a smart phone. have only had one for 6 weeks and the bulk of my attention has been on learning how to use it for medical purposes, but as a side line i am trying to master the art of posting a picture. James
