I sold a coin on eBay and just noticed they made a new deduction from my payment for a "Road improvement and food delivery fee"

    That's hysterical. Good old Minnesota.

Hmmm... I can see the rationale of ebay witholding sales taxes. But now starting to withhold specialty tailored state taxes?? Not sure I like where this is going....

They do this already with all of the various coin and bullion taxes, which differ by state.

Does eBay collect that fee from the buyer and then charge you only the vig, or do they make you eat the whole thing?

Was the fifty cents hit with a final value fee?

They withheld the full $0.50 from my payout.

Next they will be charging an “orthopedic” maintenance fee because the mailman has to walk to my front door to deliver the package and it hurts his feet.

That's insane. Can you include in your listing "No sales to Minnesota" with an explanation why?
Shouldn't eBay just add this fee to the buyer's final bid price like they add the sales tax fee?

But it's MN, not ebay at work here. What knucklehead came up with that idea.

Option is to cancel the sale. May not be a great long term solution though.

I would expect more states to follow suit with things like this as electric vehicles and more fuel efficient vehicles reduce gasoline taxes. The article does say that the vendors have the option to pass the fee on to consumers. I think eBay should allow the option to add to customer collected taxes as opposed to just hitting sellers with the fee.

Are you a small business doing less than $1 million in sales during previous year? you should be exempt
    https://revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cite/168E.05

If eBay says they are doing over $1 million in business in MN, then remind them they are a 'venue' not a business selling things ... at least that is what they have always claimed in the past.

I checked some more and sale needs to be more than $100. EBay has been charging buyers sometimes. I am not sure where you check that box when making listing.

This is how MN Dept of Rev interprets the law

Starting in 2025 ebay will be charging a toilet paper recycling fee for all 50 states.

THEY WILL IF THE STATES PASS SUCH A LAW. EBay doesn't decide what laws to obey.

Sellers do not pay this fee.

eBay adds this fee on the buyer’s end. The buyer pays the additional charge to you, and then eBay deducts it from your payout. It’s just like any other tax that eBay collects. Sellers don’t pay this.

"MedalCollector commented on New eBay fee?

Can you double check that this came out of your pay out? It should not have. eBay adds this fee on the buyer’s end. The buyer pays the additional charge to you…"

OK, I guess I didn't look closely enough,,,,, I double checked and the fee was paid by the buyer.

    Thanks for pointing that out.

I don't expect adoration. However, it doesn't seem fair that Minnesota passes a law and people start yelling about ebay.

Maybe if eBay Fee's were more reasonable people wouldn't be so quick to blame them.

I don’t think states should have the influence to add these fees. eBay is being transparent and not accepting the cost so I get it. Over taxation and bad policy. What can you expect.

    This.

And I'm wondering if this tax is applied to any other products or goods shipped to Minn., outside of ebay.

    Screw it. Boycott them.

No need for me to do so,,,,,, I was mistaken I didn't pay it the buyer did and for only 50c even if I had to pay it it would be foolish to lose a sale for such a small amount,,,,,,,,,, I know ,,,,,, the principal of the thing,,,,,,, but,,,,,,
