I would like your opinions on the grade that this coin might receive if it were sent to, let’s say PCGS, as well as if you think that grading it would increase the value.

Disclaimer: There is almost no chance that it will actually be sent in, as it isn’t worth it to me at the current moment. This is just for fun.

    Ok, exclude the crud. I am not spending the time to get it off right now. It appears to have only minimal environmental damage, and the overall odd color is due to the surface. It needs some acetone.

    I get it, this sour grade straight, but I did want to provoke a little conversation about this. Does anyone have a photo of a less than 60 graded 1968-present proof coin?

    I'll admit to being confused. It's a well-worn, modern, coin, and significantly damaged. It's worth a nickel.

    Even if it was a proof coin to begin life, what possible reason might there be to spend the money, and take the trouble, to have it graded?

    XF Details - damaged. Would not waste money getting something like that graded.

    None. That wasn't the point. I just wanted to know if it was theoretically possible for a modern proof to grade below 60. This is just an example of a worn proof.

    I hope it’s possible to get modern proof coins to straight grade as circulated. I’m currently carrying a modern silver proof dime, a modern silver proof Kennedy and a modern proof Constitution Commemorative as pocket pieces every day starting a few weeks ago so that I can submit them to PCGS at the next Long Beach show. I’m attempting to get them graded as circulated so that I can get closer to completing my #1 Registry Circulated 7070 Type set across the street. I’ve given up trying to find these already slabbed. I’m hopeful that the coins will spend enough time in my pocket this time to come back as circulated.

    I tried carrying some other modern coins about a year ago for the same set, but they weren’t proof coins (they were an Ike, a President dollar and a Sacajawea) and I only carried them for one month and they all came back as still being MS. I ended up finding all 3 of those already slabbed as AU58 so I don’t need them anymore for this set, but I still haven’t been able to find the ones shown below. I’m hopeful that the wear on the frosted cameo proof coins that I’m carrying now will be much more obvious than the rub that ended up on the non-proof coins I carried as pocket pieces last time. Also because I’m going to be carrying these proof coins as pocket pieces for a longer time before submitting them, I’m more hopeful that these ones will come back as circulated.

    Among the more iconic US coins is the 1895 Morgan dollar, which was only issued as a proof; there are more than a hundred of those graded by PCGS in circulated grades. Why would you wonder whether they would give a circulated grade on a modern proof coin? They exist to make money; if someone wants to pay the fees to have a worthless coin graded, and that coin is genuine, why would they not happily humor you?

    I have just never seen one. I thought that it would be a very unique collection to have a circulated modern proof set.
    Also, perhaps, just like other low grade moderns command a premium, then maybe these wold as well.
    I am talking about like G4 or something.
