Question on VAT Tax??????

GRANDAMGRANDAM Posts: 8,785 ✭✭✭✭✭

I sold a US coin on eBay and they charged the buyer $49.19 for a VAT (value added tax) I believe, The coin sold for $211.50 and the buyer's address is in IL.

What is this for? I have sold a lot of coins on eBay and I have never seen this charge to a buyer before so can anyone explain it to me?

25% seems awful high to me?

Is this somehow an out of country buyer?

It depends where the buyer registered their account. I had a sale recently where the shipping address was in Florida but the buyer was registered in Argentina.

Illinois is also where one of the global shipping centers is located. So this could be through that program.

It does have eiS C/O the buyers name so it must be going thru eBay shipping to an out of country address.

I am in the mid-west USA.

some out of country buyers use a re-ship service in the usa to be a "usa buyer"

I got one of those a long time ago. I messaged the seller that my responsibility ends at "delivery to the usa" address.

I think you are shipping to the eBay hub which is in Chicago IL not the buyer address. eBay will ship to the buyer.

In all my auctions I say that "I only ship to the USA" so I guess eBay does this on their own.

Anyone have an idea of what country would charge a 25% tax?

Same here, but ended up selling a proof dime to a guy in Europe. Got hung up at the hub (Kentucky I believe) then he bitched that I didn't honor the promised 5 day delivery.

A lot of them. Probably Europe.

You are only shipping to the US. The fact that the coin goes on from the hub is not yourproblem.

I've had packages take weeks to clear customs. I'm not sure why they estimate 5 days for anything international.

It's the seller's problem if the buyer negs him because of an unexpected VAT or long delays through customs even though it's beyond the control of the seller. I guess the seller can always go through the hassle of getting an unwarranted neg removed by eBay. :#

The buyer is fully aware of the VAT. It's their country that assesses it, after all. No different than sales tax.

Negatives for delays could happen no matter where the buyer is located.
