1870-s is another of those years imo, probably because there are a few denominations that are gone

Sure would be nice if one of those 1870-S Quarters we know that they struck would turn up.

THAT would be a BIG discovery!

Funny thing about 1870-S coins. I have held the 1870-S Half Dime and $3 not in slabs, and yet I have never handled an 1870-S Silver Dollar.

If you like big heavy coins, the SF Mint cranked out 982,000 $20 gold Liberties that year, and in XF or AU they trade for a very reasonable premium over melt.

Certainly the most intriguing year in the history of the San Francisco Mint. I wrote an essay on that year's production some years ago, though not knowing what I know now I did dip into fantasy and imaginative thinking.

Just a note, however, not more than a week after the cornerstone was laid did a ship sail from San Francisco and was never heard from again.

Yup. Just had to look it all up again. The cornerstone was laid on May 25, 1870. The Cremorne set sail on June 1st, 1870, bound for Liverpool. My imagination posits that there are some lost coins on that ship.
