63-D FBL Franklin ??!??!??

Just got it in the mail today...

Nice coin but I think PCGS may have been generous with the FBL image

What do you think?

yep, that one just squeeked by the FBL, must have been submitteded on a "good" day... for the sender.

  • You can't even see the bottom 3 bell lines, the only 3 that PCGS uses to determine FBL. image

the 60s are hard in FBL, and it seems that PCGs may let some borderline ones pass.

No, that looks fine to me. Of course the bell lines are soft just left of the crack, but the overall continuity of the lines is there IMO. Just fortunate that hit above the lines to the right of the crack didn't extend down over the top bell line. That would have done it in!

There is some weakness to the right of the crack that I have found to be typical on 1960-63 Frankies.... Though there are some fully struck with stronger bell lines, they are much more scarce.......

It may just be the image, but that is an easy FBL for PCGS. If you think that one is lacking, then you really ought to look at some of PCGSs 64FBLs; you would really have a laugh.

  • I agree with Lucy and the rest of the affirmatives - that's a typical 60's fbl - remember that the master die was reworked with less emphasized bell lines in 1960, so weak lines are going to be the norm in 60-63 coins. Remember too that the bell lines are a diagnostic of a "full strike" so even though the bell lines are juuuuuust getting there, you have to look at the overall quality of the coin to make a full assessment.
