    This coin was originally a perfectly normal quarter, when it left the mint. This coin has since been hit, dozens of times, by a not-very-sharp object. Exactly how and why this happened will remain a mystery, because there are multiple possible explanations, ranging from "it got caught in a garden mulcher or some similar kind of machinery" to "somebody really hated George Washington and wished to protest against him by smashing something against his portrait on a quarter until it was unrecognizable". However, none of the possible explanations involve anything that could be classified as a "mint error".
