Actor David Canary. Great character actor. This was a still from a 1967 episode. Never missed it when I was a kid.

Thought Canary was a Bonanza guy. But the Cartwrights were Civil War era so the coins would not have worked.

All my searches say Gunsmoke was set "after the Civil War" and "during the 1870's, not that it necessarily ran 20 some years from the start to finish which would mean it ended in the 1880's. That means those Morgans are either 1878's or 1879's.
With the sleuths that hang their hats here all it would take is a good, clear close-up and somebody would be able to tell the date(s) even from the reverses!!

Television played fast and loose with the facts. I remember a Gunsmoke episode with Saints clearly showing.
Yeah, Robert's was Adam and dropped out after a few years. Canary played Candy Canady in 90 plus episodes. He was in Gunsmoke for 2 episodes.
Bonanza was 1860's and Smoke was a decade later.

There is a 1974 "Gunsmoke" episode "Trail of Bloodshed" which shows some silver dollars and gold double eagles on a table.

Back in the day, we only had a 3 station TV and "Gunsmoke" wasn't one of my parents favorites and I was usually out running around anyway AND there was no way to record them back then. So I'm having a ball recording and viewing all of the episodes I can now.

Picture looks more like Charles Dierkop. Little pug nosed guy in a few Gunsmokes as well as a lot of TV and movies. Had a role in "The Sting" working for Robert Shaw.

Gunsmoke had a 20 year run, still one of the longest in TV history. On TV Land here as well as ME TV.
Innumerable scenes over the long run of the show with the desperado tossing a silver dollar on the bar in the Long Branch & Sam (or Miss Kitty) giving him a bottle of whiskey.

One of the best! I often saw a cowboy toss coins down on the bar and wondered the denomination of it. Was it a quarter? Or did they use a modern coin? It sure had a familiar ring to it, like silver!
Anyway, I miss ya Matt Dillon! My hero among many of that era! I still record old episodes.
