1878-S Shadows

Trying to narrow VAM attribution and noticed these shadows under date and stars. What would cause this? Thanks.

And of course I had a photo. I just don’t know why it didn’t upload.

Without a photo it's hard to help you.

I would guess from your description you are talking about pull away toning like this example.
A coin doesn't need to be toned to see the pull away shadows.
The cause of it is metal flow during striking.

Pull away toning sounds very much like the right term.. now that I researched it, I understand what it is. Thank you for your help.
