PSA 9oc to SGC 6

I cracked this out of a PSA 9oc slab and submitted to SGC with a bunch of other 68's. I was hoping for an 8, or 7 at the very least. I know SGC has a reputation for prioritizing centering, but a 6 is crazy to me.

A 6 seems reasonable to me considering the top centering.

Ouch, that's a nice looking card.
Nice looking card, but to my eye the centering is off enough to be borderline miscut. Even for a 7 you can be no worse than 70/30 - and it looks to be well outside that. I think a 9OC was your best possible outcome for that card.

9 is typically a fairly easy way to attain that grade from PSA when it comes with the qualifier and is generally considered to equate to a 2 grade downgrade with a straight grade. I agree with the sentiment that a PSA 9OC is preferable to a straight 6, especially in an SGC holder.

I guess I was relying on my personal preference too much, and not the technical aspect. I much prefer cards off center top to bottom over left to right.
9OC is a nearly perfect card and they are just confirming what everyone can already see that it is OC. A 6 is really ambiguous, is it just OC, or are there other issues with the card? 9OC is one of my favorite vintage grades especially is the OC is top to bottom, not L-R.
I agree that if off-centered…a card presents worse side-to-side than top-to-bottom being off-centered.
I have a Clemente RC (PSA-6.5) and accepted the 70/30 centering top-to-bottom when viewed horizontally…but it has 50/50 centering side-to-side and exceptional coloring for the issue which typically is washed out. Here's the card:
Still like the Mays overall. Nice corners,color. Rather have l/r centering.
Should be a 7.
Am I missing something? Side to side looks very good to me.

I get that, but Monte said he thinks side to side looks worse the t/b.

That’s what I’m saying. I gave an example with my Clemente RC. If the off centering were 70/30 the other way, it would look worse. JMHO
No, he said OC L/R looks worse to him than OC T/B.
