Solid find, congratulations. It's a shame about the staining, I'd grade it VG10 by wear alone.

If the staining was caused by extended storage in a vintage Whitman album, a quick wipe on fabric will remove it.
A quick wipe on WHAT will remove it?
Of the many circulated Whitman-folder-stained wheat cents I have handled, they were all greatly improved. I know the look of them, and it is almost always (naturally) seen on the reverse. I can't say whether this is the same or not, but even if the stain doesn't come off, it's not like it will hurt the value of the coin. If it makes you believe me more, I wiped a 1909-S VDB on my shirt and increased its eye appeal so much that the shop owner was able to sell it the day after. (for context i was working to get paid in coins)

Great find! Not sure what the value is but if you get it slabbed, suggest letting the professionals at the grading service conserve it.

That is a very fortunate discovery. This coin does not come to market very often and when it does the eye appeal is generally not too good. I was lucky to purchase this one. It is AU58 but I believe it has better appearance than most of the MS examples that have been offered.

Whenever I find an impaired proof I wipe the fields with an eyeglass cleaner rag. It doesn't leave any hairlines and gets all the finger oil and most of the fogginess off. They are slightly beat up anyway.

Awesome find! As mentioned, that's an underrated DDO and one of the tougher ones for the series. PCGS has only graded about 400 and only about 35 of those are RB or RD. For comparison, PCGS has graded about 6000 '55 DDOs.

I'm wondering how many have been slabbed without the DDO attribution.
This story goes back to the early 1990s, but a New England dealer I knew with the best eyes for varieties showed me one unattributed in a MS64RD holder. He wouldn't tell me how he found it, but later on at the same show I saw a dealer with another 7-8 graded 1917 cents, he must have sent in the best coins from a roll and my acquaintance picked him clean.
I've found a few of these, usually low grade coins with assorted problems, though ages ago I did get one certified by our host as a VG 10. The best one I found came off eBay, it was an unnatural orange color that graded out as XF Details.

Great find - congrats! If you decide to submit for grading, I agree with @PerryHall - it might be a good idea to try & get it conserved. Attempting to wipe it, etc. yourself might not be a good idea, given that there aren’t that many graded examples.

Was thinking no, from your first pic, but those excellent macro shots changed my mind quickly!

Great find. Been looking for a long time through 1917, 1936, 1941 rolls. One '36 DDO found in all that time. Good for you.
Here's a few more you can look for. A friend sent me these cards.

Interesting Sean, thanks! 👍

Great find. The 1917 DDO cent is one of my favorites even though I have never owned one.
