I bought a hoard!

RussRuss Posts: 48,514 ✭✭✭
I run a small ad looking for proof JFKs and this guy calls me up and says the magic words "I have some 1964 proof sets". So, I head out to his place, and besides the '64 sets, he has a bunch of other coins I don't want. Using high pressure tactics on me, he forced me to buy the whole lot to get the sets.image So, now I have:

(8) 1964 JFK business strikes
(10) Frankie business strikes
(3) Very old Walkers
(2) Ikes (blech!)
(1) Peace Dollar
(1) SAE
(4) Jefferson nickels
(1) 1916 Mercury dime (is D mint worth anything?)
(1) Silver Roosie
(1) Off center Roosie
(2) Silver Washingtons
(1) SLQ
(2) V Nickels (is 1913 worth anything?)
(20) Indian Head Cents.

Now I can run an eBay listing with "HOARD" in the title! WooHoo!!!image

Batch of five, unopened. Got back here to the shop, opened them and nothing special.

Russ- A genuine 1916-D merc is the key date of the series- AG examples sell for a few hundred... then the price just goes up.

Jeremy, it's not like Russ to streeeetch the truth or lie [he's just a smart ass]
The President claims he didn't lie about taxes for those earning less then $250,000 a year with public mandated health insurance yet his own justice department has said they will use the right of the government to tax when the states appeals go to court.

Russ, you do not have a hoard until you have had 9,993,444 of these.

    This is my 9,993,445th.

    Cheerios 2000 cents

It was cheaper this way than buying and opening all those Cherios boxes. image

Russ - if those 53-S Frankies have very sharp bell lines on the reverse, you'll need to send them to me for proper disposal (they were made with defective dies). Thanks. image

    Russ,

Where do you advertise? I'm curious how people find coin hoards.

    Mikey,

It's a weekly called The Little Nickel. Frankly, the calls are few and far between and usually people who can't read and have junk.

(Wait, is today the First of April?)

Mikey -- I've bought two hoards. One complete, and one I bought about 2/3 of it. The first I stumbled onto by talking to a dealer at a show. I mentioned my interest in [DARKSIDE ALERT! DARKSIDE ALERT! image] the circulating and pattern coins of Liberia, and he mentioned that he had a batch of some 35 or 40 he'd bought years ago. From then on it was negotiation over the phone. The second was a friend: he wanted to sell, and I helped him appraise it and bought about 2/3 of the collection. Both, I would say, were somewhat chance encounters or conversations. I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed the second one -- if I ever flunk out of being a college professor, maybe I can go into the numismatic appraisal business.

that's the rare "floating D" variety. not only is it rare but having the two pieces together is even better. i wouldn't break that set up if i were you.
