Finally sending in my membership application. I could use an extra source of information and camaraderie in my quest to build my collection of XF Barber Quarters. For twenty bucks, it seems like a pretty good deal. Need to broaden my knowledge base and expand my sources.

I was wondering who else here is a BCCS member and if they’d like to share what the Society has added to their Barber interests. Please tell me. I wasn’t sure which forum was more appropriate, so I chose this one as it appears to be the better choice.

Many years ago, I used to share information with Mike Hayes and others, but have lost track of them or they have long gone away. Sorry to say.

I'm a BCCS member. I like the Quarterly Magazine as there have been many articles I found educational for me, with regard to where I am currently, in collecting Barber coins. Mostly working on V nickels right now but pick up other denominations when I find a nice example.
Mike Hayes passed a few years ago but I was fortunate enough to have taken a class taught by him on Barber Coinage at the ANA Summer Seminar some years ago. John Frost is now the President and Journal editor and does a great job.

I completed a set of VF/XF quarters a few years ago. The 01-s was an F15 though, but probably a VF20 by current standards.

Great looking coin! Can’t quite see clearly, but VF is definitely possible. Congrats on completing. After a long hiatus from collecting Barbers, I’ve noticed a greater amount of keys available for sale since getting back into it. Some of the prices are a little hard to swallow.

Hi @Barbercoin ! Please keep us updated on your quest for XF quarters. That will be a fantastic set, and pretty difficult if your going for good original coins too! I collect all the denominations in proof and mint state, and generally go for very original toned pieces. Here's a favorite half.... Can't have too many Barber pics!

I'm a member of the BCCS and have written a couple of articles for the journal, as well. I don't know how much I actually receive from any of the niche groups I belong to, but the possible help that my small commitment of time, knowledge and financial support might make is enough.

EF Barber quarters...you are braver than I am!

I like the BCCS as almost every issue has something that broadens my knowledge. Enjoy your quest for an XF set of barber quarters. Years back, I put together a VF-XF set, it took quite a while and was a great deal of fun.

Well great! I was thinking that maybe BCCS membership and enthusiasm had dwindled over the years.

I’m so looking forward to the quarterly journals and reading insightful articles.

Eldorado, that half is absolutely mouthwatering. I recall years back, all the great barber pictures posted on the MFH Mega Barber Thread (surely a CU nominee for the Hall of Fame).

Good luck in your endeavor, as the Barber quarters are certainly a noble series.

Mike Hayes was my mentor back in the day, I was glad I got to meet him in person several times prior to his passing.

I worked on raw sets of all three Barber series starting back around 2005. I sold off my halves during the Great Recession while unemployed, and the dimes went a few years later. I kept working on the quarters as to me they were the most interesting and challenging. I was seeking reasonably original coins, in F15-AU, and sans the Big Three, and even with these broad attributes it was still tough. Granted I only hunted them at shows and didn’t utilize the internet for offerings.

I never found a 97S in the wild above VG. I came across a true AU once as part of a set, but it looked like it was scrubbed with a Brillo pad, and even at a steep discount I had to pass.

I started losing interest 4-5 years ago, and a forum member here was starting a set, so most of them went to him over time. The duplicates of better dates were sold to Liz Coggan at FUN.

I like your idea, so much in fact, I have already tried it, My set is complete, minus the 01S and 13S. Now, I am in the process of trying to decide if I am going to get the coins slabbed or keep them raw in my album. From my experience, XF/VF is a great range to build a set. Be on the look out for problem coins!

This was my last pick up from a slot I downgraded from an AU that just looked too much out of place....

I've been a standing member for twenty plus years. The quarterly magazine you'll receive is well worth the membership. John Frost, the club President, attends most larger coin shows and is quite approachable, quick to engage with any of your questions or concerns. I am still learning from him after all these years. As others have commented, the goal of extra-fine is challenging indeed yet highly rewarding in the end. Myself, I'm a month into the Liberty nickel series targeting AU-MS. Yeah, going to get expensive. Any advice on how to conceal the actual cost to my better half?

That’s what I was looking for. I appreciate your input. I was hoping there was still life to the organization and the quarterlies were worthwhile. You answered that question. Thank you, sir!

In AU/low MS they wont cost that much until you get to a few of them under the belt. When you add the 1888, 1894, and 1895, they can start adding up. Then they get really pricey at 1885, 1886, 1912D and 1912S. The keys will cost you about as much as the others combined, if not more. I have done the set several times now in different grades.
