My name is Kellen Hoard, and I currently serve as one of the Representatives of the General Public on the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee. I am an undergraduate student, and the youngest person to ever serve on the Committee. For those of you unfamiliar with the CCAC, it was established in 2003 by Congress to advise the Secretary of the Treasury on the themes and designs of all US coins and medals. The CCAC serves as an informed, experienced and impartial resource to the Secretary of the Treasury and represents the interests of American citizens and collectors.

This is the third installment of my updates about what the CCAC is doing at its meetings. I think it is critical that the collecting community have insight into and input to the CCAC, and will try to answer any questions you may have.

Here is my update for the CCAC meeting on June 18, 2024.

  1. Candidate designs for the Iran Hostages Congressional Gold Medal were discussed in consultation with Barry Rosen (former hostage), Steve Kirtley (former hostage), Dave Roeder (former hostage), BreAnn Hollinger (State Department Brand Manager with the United States Department of State and the Bureau of Global Public Affairs), and Ezra Friedlander (Congressional liaison to the program). The CCAC approved the following obverse and reverse designs - the preferences of stakeholders - with some minor textual adjustments (e.g. "United States Embassy" instead of "American Embassy") to ensure consistency throughout the medal.

  2. Candidate designs for the 2026 Native American $1 Coin were considered again, after the CCAC previously requested the Mint revise several potential designs considered in April. The discussion included Celia Bussard (General Counsel of the Oneida Indian Nation) and Denise Desiderio (Senior Policy Advisor for Akin on behalf of the Oneida Indian Nation). The CCAC approved the following reverse design, with some minor adjustments to the placement of certain text elements.

Let me know if you have any questions about the work done in this meeting; I will try to answer as well as I can, but there are contraints on what I am able to share publicly. Please remember that the CCAC does not make the final decision; instead, it makes its recommendation (alongside the Commission of Fine Arts) to the Secretary of the Treasury. If you would like to watch the June meeting in full in order to see all of the deliberations, it is available on Youtube here.

It is too bad the dollar coins don't circulate.

    All glory is fleeting.

Fitting tribute with the Iran Hostages gold medal. Grateful some of the former hostages get to have their input recognized as well. Thanks again for sharing with us @KellenCoin!

True, but WE can all do our part. Just today I was at my bank and I got another stack of 100 $2 bills, and four rolls of $1 coins and Half Dollars to spread around my area as I pay cash for items, and leave in addition to larger bills as cash tips. They almost always bring smiles to the general public. No Ike Dollars were available today, but those are always greatly appreciated when I get some to leave too!

    Steve

I have some questions about the dollar. First, why is Washington clutching his coat closed? Surely he had a button or clasp? Second, was he known to inspect provisions personally? I would imagine he had someone who did this, like say, a quartermaster? Third, why does everyone look so serious about corn? Based on those facial expressions, they appear more in need of prune juice.

Having fun while switching things up and focusing on a next level PCGS slabbed 1950+ type set, while still looking for great examples for the 7070.

A bit late with the Iran hostages medal isn’t it?
