Monster in a Box!

CoinscratchCoinscratch Posts: 8,259 ✭✭✭✭✭

My sons baseball team was running deep into their World Series this week until today when our next opponent's pitcher walked out onto the field. This guy was 6' 2" 200lbs and throwing 75 to 80 mph. He was a monster for 13U baseball where the kids are used to seeing 60 to 65 mph. Well, the close of another season the tenth I believe and those kids played their hearts out and learned a lot and will soon be men. The coach even teared up and I'm okay with long goodbyes and everything but this tournament was almost 2 hours from my home and only about ten minutes away from one of my favorite coin dealers :)

A few moments later I'm dredging around his shop like a hungry shark looking for an easy meal. He's actually a coin/jewelry dealer which is even tastier because those guys typically don't have a strong allegiance to only coins especially raw and will readily discount anything I show an interest in. So after casing the entire place and coming up empty and about to walk out the door. I reminded him of a box that he had brought out before. One that I had found a very nicely toned Kennedy in a couple years back. And sure enough he dug up a box consisting mostly of boxed Silver Eagles and commemoratives and others.

I opened this one and with my best poker face quickly asked for a price, $45.00 he said with a grin on his face, sold!
Now that I home I think the silver is worth more than the $45 yet I still don't care because I absolutely love this green monster.

Congrats on the good season and the pick up after the game!
My son decided not to play this year and would have been a shoe-in for the Allstar team that’s going to State. Oh well. We’ll still have soccer and basketball and golf and track.
    Keep digging through those boxes!

I remember coaching a few games that went like that. My son’s team was 16/15 and we had a double header against a team that was stacked. They had gotten releases for their players to play on the team. They pitched a different kid every inning…i hated it.

$45 is a great price for all of that silver. However, 1964 Kennedy halves are ultra-common so don't start throwing money away by having it slabbed unless you are certain it can bring big money. Is the toning on that 1964 Kennedy something that the toning crowd would pay big money for? Would it have to be in a very high grade MS PCGS holder in order to bring such money?

Baseball is a mess. Hopefully your coach is none of the player's parents.

Comparing your toned kennedy to the other recent threads on them, I’d say pcgs ms68+ and it should bring well over $500 through greatcollections.

I saw one of those and said something like, take away the toning and your coin is MS63. Same with this one as it’s pretty banged up.

I won’t be getting it slabbed until the TV dept. learns how to take pics again, that would be a waste of time and money @291fifth

    Thank you.
By the way, I certainly wouldn't want to do it, but why can't you pick your friend's nose? :D

Cause he might punch me in the nose.

Good read. I like the "hungry sharks" analogy. Mainly because we are.
Then there was Tennessee vs Texas A&M at the CWS.

I know right. It's hard not to look like a scavenger when you are one. He tested me when he asked if I'd like to see some really nice Morgans from the safe and I declined.

When I was 15, I was on my Little League's senior division all-star team. Most of the others were coaches' sons or their pals. It didn't help that I was a skinny runt (but a good player nevertheless).
Before our first game (and last...), the other guys were freaked out when they saw the opposing pitcher warming up. He was so fast! When I was finally put in the game, around the fourth or fifth inning, we had no hits. I broke the no-hitter, stole second, and eventually scored our only run.
Two days earlier, at practice, I was tracking a deep fly ball in left field. As I caught the ball, I turned to see where the (chain-link, with bar at the top around 4' off the ground) fence was. It was there. In my mouth.
Even after all that, I didn't get the respect of the coaches' kids, or their dads.

You should have $45 in melt value and maybe a few coins that could be sold for more than melt. The Kennedy might be too dark for some but I like it.

    That’s funny bones 😆

Here is a cell pic that shows the coin in a better light. And the 68 D next to it.
I might need to check my screen settings at home my true views are too dark.

So do you see a “Monster” in my item? 2 oz .999 silver, about 1/4” thick) from limitedmintage.com for just a few dollars over spot plus reasonable shipping. They have a whole series of eight or so horror monsters.

    I agree with mark,

I think you will be a bit surprised how underwhelming the 64 will grade and sell for. Hope Im wrong.

I agree with him as well about the "Eye of the beholder". I never had illusions (for very long) about the possible grade and eventual sell. I'm not even sure that it would straight grade nor would I send in for a TV at this point in time.
But! It was an exciting day overall and that coin was the green icing on the cake.

I will go back and look at his Morgans in the safe something tells me he's like Ricko when it comes to tarnish! ;)

I was just curious what it would look like in a slab and realized I’ve been doing it all wrong, paying up for true views when clearly the coins will sell much easier without one. Especially now.
