Toning on a 2002 Silver Dollar ?

Hi, I recently got this one out of my drawer. What could cause this strange color ? Nothing sat on top of it and it was in a coin flip. Why is the other side not "infected" ?

Looks like normal toning- I have some that have picked up a little color in the flip... this type of silver is just very reactive. Example:

The reverse is very similar.

That's a pretty one. Being a 2002 coin , do you think I should clean it and put it in a proper holder ? I know it's a bad idea to clean in general but this coin is brand new.

Looks like a normal reaction. Could be that the flip wasn't right next to a toning source but relatively near one. For example, furniture polish can be a toning source if a coin is left on wood. And it would affect one side more likely because one side of the coin presses right against the plastic while the other side has a little breather space.

What should you do? Depends. If it tones really nicely, it'll gain value. If it tones ugly, it stays the same basic value (bullion).

I've got a couple of early 1990s ASEs similar to the pic that Jeremy posted, but not quite as much violet. It's confined to the periphery with a light golden tone starting on the rest of the coin. They were in Airtite holders. Some toned, some didn't.

chiefbob, your icon is fascinating. I have seen it somewhere. Is it related to the weapon industry in South Africa? I have seen something similar as a logo for Denel or one of it's subsidiaries.

Anyway, I think I will keep this coin as is and see what happens to it.

My icon is related to a weapon industry, but it happens to be the US Air Force.

After 35 years total service, I thought it was a good one to use. I'm not exactly crazy about it, though. It's a relatively new design to depict the modern Air Force, replacing the Hap Arnold insignia style.

Thanks chiefbob, I guess the agressive advertising campaign imprinted that icon on me. I need to brush up on US insignia.
