This one is more of a coinscratch and I didn’t see it for a few seconds of euphoria.

This one would easily grade 67/+ without the one unfortunate hit.

I had it graded anyway just to see and still it sold for a premium.

I think the (double-digit number of) marks on the reverse would have preluded a grade 67 or higher.

You’re right, the hit on the obverse is so prominent and unfortunate I tend to forget about the reverse.

@LeeBone - Where exactly on that 22-D is that scratch?

Yup, that’s it. Not major, but it’s there. Pretty coin otherwise.

MS66; and without the scratches under George's jaw possibly an MS66+ or even an MS67.

    Staple scratch on the reverse.
    Such a nice coin.
To me it's still a coin I like in my album.

While not exactly a scratch, 10 or so years ago, I had this coin for it's nice strike.

    1797 BB-72 / B-2 PCGS XF Details $1
Obverse has a weak asterisk scratch on Liberty's neck and the reverse has one in the lower left periphery. Still an excellent presentation,

This 1853-O has a scratch in the lower right field along the leg as well as some polishing on the obverse.

Straight grade AU53 but a small staple scratch I think. I doubt I will ever be able to upgrade this one though.

This is a late-medieval “sword” type demi-gros of Antoine the Good of the Duchy of Lorraine, struck between 1508 and 1544.

It had some unfortunate hairlines on the sword side that I totally overlooked before sending the coin to PCGS.

Note how they’re all but invisible in the pictures I had.

They showed up in the TrueViews, though.

Bummer. Turns out these were those subtle, sneaky kind of scratches that are only visible at certain angles to the light.

    PCGS gave it VF details/scratched.

Oh well. The coin is a relatively common type, as 16th century coins go, and thus not terribly expensive. And I suppose a few hairlines on a 500-year-old coin aren’t the end of the world. It was a dealbreaker for my collection, though, as I only keep straight-graded coins.

As I recall, I swapped it out to @illini420 in exchange for some photo editing assistance.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

More than a scratch, unfortunately - somebody (or something) really massacred this 1806 Quarter Dollar.
A real pity since this is also a very scarce variety, B-6, R-5. I have kept the coin as it is otherwise a nice example.
