I only have a 43-S in mint state. From what I've heard, the 40s SF coins tend to have weak strikes often. Can anyone explain what to look for when looking for strong/weak strikes? I've read that the center of the obverse and the hands are areas that show strike quality, but when I zoom in on pictures people have uploaded here it becomes too blurry to tell how the strike is.

Yes, the 40 S is probably considered the worst struck coin of the series. This was posted on Coin World in 2015 and pretty much sums it up:
"The obverse facial details and hand holding a branch are typically weak. The hand is directly in line with the high points of the eagle's breast and left leg on the reverse, which is also typically either weakly struck or the first place to wear."

Wow! Some beauties popped out. A 40S with any hand at all and showing some rear left leg too is fantastic. Several with some nice rear legs. Here's my 40 MS66. Thanks for all these gorgeous coin photos. Hope more show up.

1921’s are a tough date but often come nice. Just bought this one:

full head
nice thumb detail
complete stem split
nice definition on rev trailing leg
extra nice for grade.

Lots of hammered coins here. I'll post a date/MM that doesn't always come hammered, a 1936-S in MS-66. I also look for the eagle's leg on the reverse to be well struck too.

I built my 40 coin late date registry set from raw coins “in the wild”, but the 36S in Gem and 33S in any MS grade had eluded me. I think it is time to give up and purchase them already graded

Yeah, I acquired the 39-D and 39-S about 12 or so years ago off ebay, graded 66 and 65 respectively. Now, Walkers are harder to acquire raw, even for the common dates in Gem or above. I did have a 39-S in 64, but sold it off anticipating I would find one in 65 or better - since then I can't find a decent raw one in ANY MS grade on ebay.

Let's see some well struck Walking Liberty Half Dollars.
