CSNS Newp, short report

Central States is an easy show for me to attend. 10 minutes drive, 15 if I miss the two left turn arrows. I got to the show at about 9:10 Thursday morning and started setting up my camera gear. Within a couple minutes I hear, "Hey, John!" Those who have been around shows know that this will get the attention of about half of the people present. I looked up, and Andy Skrabalak was telling me to stop by when I had a chance. So after I finished setting up, I stopped by his table, where he had a coin waiting for me. Over the past few years, I'd purchased matte proof Lincolns dating 1909-1915 from him. He had a 1916 picked out for me that he wanted me to have dibs on and gave me time to pay for. Not 20 minutes into the show and I'd already blown my budget on this bad boy in PR66BN

So what to do for the rest of the show now that I was essentially out of cash? Met up with a few VAM guys, took some photos of some cool coins that at least one member will probably post here later, enjoyed seeing familiar faces and their coins. Looked at stuff with no pressure on myself to buy anything. Chatted with Ian at GC about his registry plans on MyCollect and my attribution service. A couple nice dinners.

Friday afternoon at the show took on the feel of a Saturday afternoon at around 1:30. Few people in attendance, a lot of dealers left. Hoping Saturday has a fresh crowd, but the $15 adult entry fee on Saturday might chase away a lot of casual attendees and families. If it does, I guess I'll just keep looking at my newp.

Honorable mention to the weather for making this the nicest CSNS show on that front.

    not quite sure why $15 admission fee would scare away folks when viewing dealers inventory and the chance to find a needed coin is worth more than the price of admission?

    They could always offer to refund the $15 if you don't find anything.

    Since a significant number of dealers start leaving on Friday, Saturday is almost like a ghost town at these shows. This year it was free entry after 12 on Saturday but it really should be the full day since one is only getting a small fraction of the value of a Thursday or Friday.

    I had a different point of view on charging an admission fee. I have no issue paying an admission fee for a show when the majority of dealers are there. However, if dealers leaves Friday afternoon thru Saturday and the majority of the dealers have left, then I feel the dealers should be charged a fee for leaving the show early and Friday afternoon & Saturday attendees should be rewarded by getting a fee to attend. (Don't you want more collectors to show up ). I went to a national show on a saturday morning and paid a fee, just to watch dealers pack up and leave. Thats just plain wrong when the show was advertised to be open thru Saturday at 5pm.

    Contractually event organizers should require bourse table holders stay through Saturday

    I was able to get in for free Saturday after 12:00. Granted most of the dealers were packing up/already gone, but definitely a few that were ready to deal. I ended up buying a nice Bust Half from David Kahn.

    I made note of this in my report too. I think something needs to be done about that.
