The “SBA Thread”. Give it some Luv!

ambro51ambro51 Posts: 13,648 ✭✭✭✭✭

Oh these things never got Luv, cashiers hated them, the portrait was ugly, they got mistaken for quarters. They’re common, no Keys… no roll searching. Functionally obsolete today. Turns out though, they were the Hero that saved the day when they were rushed back into production after nearly two decades to fill government needs. So Show Suzy

There are a few minor proof varieties that are “keys”, interestingly the 1999 proof was struck in Philadelphia, with a P mintmark

Not that I wanted it. She made me fill a hole in my 7070. A face only a mother could love. 😉

    @ambro51- Don't forget the 79-P wide rim.

The question is, is the SBA more or less maligned than the 20 cent piece was in its day?

My biggest memory of the SBA in the day was trying to buy a 50 cent item and being told I needed another one. I had to tell the cashier I needed change!

Beautiful!. We tend to fixate on the portrait side…..but study the reverse, the beautiful rendition of the eagle. As a stand alone design (with all due respect to the Ike reverse) it’s IMHO one of the finest on a US coin.

It’s Too Bad that the SBA is the Only “Silver Dollar” never struck in Silver. Sad, they would have been a delight, a great pocket piece!

My Granddaughter portrayed Susan B Anthony in a Class at School, I placed one SBA in a 2x2 and gave one to each classmate and Teacher, I indicated that it was a One Dollar coin and "not" a Quarter. so many were amassed they never saw one.

I just got this back from PCGS. Do you think it is a wide rim? or normal (narrow) rim?

I am not an expert, but for me the rim designations can be confusing. I think the closeness of the date to the rim is the real test.

I never liked the 1999 issue. I always thought they were too flat. The 1979 dates had a nice high relief.> @JBK said:

Here is the same slabbed coin with an SBA found a few weeks ago which I think is typical. Do you think the date on the PCGS coin is closer? or about the same?

To me the slabbed coin looks near, the raw coin looks far.

It appears to be a wide rim (close date take your pick) and PCGS said MS64.

    Now THAT’S a wide rim!

Never thought I would actually buy a Susie, but saw this at FUN while buying something else and he threw it in for $3. Good enough for the 7070:

I have always liked the SBA dolllars. Sure, not the best design but it was the first different new coin that I can remember from when I first started collecting and that was exciting. Then we got into the whole wide rim thing which added to the interest. And it is one of the series I have a full set of so there is that!

You are right about the PCGS grade, but they decline to label it Wide Rim even though I did indicate it on the form. I think they are wrong...

The 1999 issues make me wonder why the proofs weren't struck at San Francisco. I like the 1979-S and 1981-S Type 2 issues. Has anyone here found a 1980-S Proof with a repunched mintmark?

The S-mint Proof sets were a done deal by the time it was decided to strike dollar coins. Rather than have some people whine “Why doesn’t my S-mint proof set have the S-mint dollar? You cheated me!” the Mint wisely decided to make the dollar a free-standing P-Mint Proof.

The SBA obverse could've been reissued as a 24k gold coin in 2020 with a reverse commemorating the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage. Frank Gasparro's designs are underrated.

This is a most interesting thread, covering a series seldom noted, but unique in many ways. So Many beautifully toned and well struck specimens! …….and I don’t believe once was the rather “ugly” portrait mentioned!
