Original Roll of 1909-S VDB?

Options
I just got an email from PCGS with the subject "Original Roll of 1909-S VDB Copper Cent Realizes Over $1 Million" But there is nothing whatsoever about that in the article that came with the email. Did that really happen? I remember watching a video recently of David Hall saying there has never been one sent to PCGS.

Interesting. Even at $5,000 a pop, you would only have $250,000 worth of coins. When people attach the words, "key date" in front of the 1909-S VDB. They mean that it is a "key" only due to it costing a lot of money, and not "key" in the sense than it is any harder to find that an old Coca-cola bottlecap right? image

Now that I watched the video in that email, I get the title... in the video they talk about a roll of 1909-S VDB cents that was bought many years ago for $5 per coin and that it would be worth six figures today. The email also talks about the first Cent selling for over $1 million at the Holmes auction.

The title of the email should not read:

Original Roll of 1909-S VDB Copper Cent Realizes Over $1 Million

    But should instead read:

Original Roll of 1909-S VDB - Copper Cent Realizes Over $1 Million

    OR

Original Roll of 1909-S VDB; Copper Cent Realizes Over $1 Million

please forgive the silly question (i don't collect cents).... Did the mint roll pennies in 50ct rolls back in 1909? is there such a thing as an original 50ct mint roll from 1909?

This is a "believe it or not" buttttttt.......

As a 14 yr old working saturdays at a shop in 1971 ....

a gent in his 40s came in with an ORIGIANL ROLL OF 1909-S V.D.B.s.

Said he got them at his fathers passing. Owner paid him $200 each [x 50].

We sold 40 of them over the next 6 months at $250 each. [ He has the other 10 to this day.]

Every piece was a spotless original RD / RB gem.

I have always thought what a shame that that roll was singled out.

I certainly believe the story, as I purchased a bright red 1909s-vdb, one of four pieces from an original roll, for $400 in 1971 at a show in Spokane, Washington.

They were owned at the time by Don Harris of H&H coins, (John Love's partner) in Great Falls, Montana. I also bought a gem 1909s IH cent at the same time from the same dealer.

edited - I don't know if they were from a bank wrapped roll or not, but there was reportedly 50 pieces sold at the same time.

I doubt that the mint did - probably the banks did though....there are numerous documented instances of rolls of these cents (as well as the other '09 Lincolns) appearing over the years.

If you study the way a couple people hoarded 1909-S VDB cents, it's totally believable that rolls would still be around.

No, these were not supplied in rolls from the mint or the banks. Rolling of coins did not become popular until the teens, when automatic equipment became available. Cents in '09 were supplied in small bags of I believe 250 pieces. Any roll would have been wrapped later when the original owner of the bag decided to break it up...RayP

Let me be serious for a change here. How many of us at one time or the other has not dreamed or fantasized about finding such an item in an old family heirloom. My grandmother always saved coins and I always thought somewhere she might have had something like that. But I am now 60, she has been gone for 30 years, and they still haven't turned up.

My Grandma saved coins, mostly halves, for me for many years. She had a huge white donkey bank to put them in. Even when she moved to a retirement home, she kept the donkey bank and kept putting halves into it when she got them. When she was I think 97 or 98, someone broke in and either stole the bank or just broke it and took the coins, I don't know which. Very sad day, as that bank was one of her precious items she wanted to hand down to her grandson. She lived to 101, and would have lived forever I think if she just hadn't fallen and broken her hip.

A nice story there Ray and a pleasant memory of your grandmother. My grandmother had a little metal world bank in which she kept her coins from change. I have always wondered what happened to that bank. Probably thrown away as useless. No one in the the family had an idea of my love for that little metal bank and the fact I would have loved to have it.

And be wary of rolls selling on ebay showing a 1909 on one end and a Indian head cent on the other....you don;t want one of those,

I was at the PCGS Las Vegas Show when it was submitted and then waited until it got out of grading. Absolutely stunning coins and all 50 graded, no problems. Some very high grades as I recall.
It was submitted by a S. Cal dealer for a client.

No, but it was about 10 years ago. One of the first shows at the Venetian. Pre photo and shields. There were 4 that were 67 as I recall. We sat at the table and passed them around. I was almost afraid of touching them!!

I think I remember a Bolender auction catalog, about 1920, that had a single lot with 1909 S VDB, unc., 50 coins. Don't remember if the word "roll" was used.
