Grading opinions on a seated half.

COINS MAKE CENTSCOINS MAKE CENTS Posts: 1,879 ✭✭✭✭✭

Seated coinage is not really my specialty, far from it actually.

What is your opinion on the grade of this 1853 Seated Half?

Thanks!

Like you, I'm not an expert on grading these, but I have looked at quite a few when building my type sets. I'd call it VF30.

PS I would said vf35 wouldn't bother me at all. Also, I've always liked the rays design on the reverse of that year.

    XF40. LIBERTY is sharp.

I like it as a 40 too. Nice coin!

Maybe just the pictures but my first impression was xf details.

Somewhere in the xf range... Tough to tell if any luster or issues that could be a details coin.

XF40 details but downgraded to a 35 because of excessive small marks in the obverse fields.

I’m waffling into a 40; there’s a lot to like about this one.

Solid EF40 wear-wise with light surface granularity that is exposed by cleaning/wiping. I'm not sure if it would straight grade at EF40, but I tend to be overly picky. I would certainly buy it as an example of a die marriage, or if it "speaks to me." Some coins do, particularly rare DMs. That coin doesn't speak to me, though, on its looks alone.

Edited to add: The more I look at it the more I feel that it's a cleaned, lightly corroded coin that has retoned a bit. After having one similar to this rejected recently by PCGS, I doubt it will straight grade.

XF40 details, depending on what it looks like in hand.

If straight graded, I feel a strong VF35 is warranted.

I'm not anything like an expert (duh!), but I have a VF30 and a VF35 seated Liberty half, and this one looks better than either of mine. I'd guess XF40.

But I don't know about the texture of the surface on both sides; it may end up details.

Curious: what is connecting the U of UNITED to the rim denticles? Cud, strikethrough, what? None of my 53s has that.

    VF/XF. Leaning towards XF.

    Looks like a die crack.

I think VF35 based on the obverse. Interesting die crack at U on the rev. Nice looking coin!
