1928 Saint Gaudens

Hello everyone. New here, but I’ve been collecting Morgans and US gold coins for a while. I have this 1928 double eagle that I like, but want some opinions from guys who know more than me. Just want to make sure it’s a real US minted coin. The size and weight are correct for a US minted double eagle. Hopefully my pictures are clear enough. I can try for better ones if I need to. Thank you.

    Welcome to the forum! :)

    Looks genuine to me.

Thank you. I’m a forum member on many forums for militaria and firearms, but this is my first coin forum. I’ve always loved them, but I typically buy the common dates to hoard gold and silver.

Welcome to the forum. The coin looks genuine but the way you are holding the coin is way wrong. Please do for now on hold the coin on the edges. This will prevent the finger prints over the surfaces.

The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

Copy that I’ll do that from now on.

Looks real to me but AU. Lots of chatter marks not very lustrous either. Try to be on the safe side and get a slabbed one.

This is not the way to hold a valuable coin, unless you want your fingerprints to be part of the provenance.

For commons, esp. in low-60's or AU grades, the premium (if any) to spot gold is miniscule or non-existent (aside from the gold content differential).

I have a 1928 on my To-Buy list. Largest mintage among the Saints, and the story of the stolen 1928's is fascinating, if not lacking in details.

@Garand42, you should consider purchasing certified and protected Saints like this. No fingerprints.

That's obviously a much nicer coin, but it should also cost at least a few hundred dollars more. For someone who hoards gold and silver, as the OP said he does, a lower cost AU example might be a better choice.

Welcome to the forums! I like your choice of coins. I think I’m going to like your choice of guns, given your name. Are you on the cmp forums by chance? Here’s some of my collection…

Quite the M1 collection there! I am on cmp, carbine club, Wehrmacht Awards, and US militaria forum. I tend to buy US Airborne stuff, but I like it all. I buy whatever I like I guess. I go for the higher end grouping if I can. And I buy all sorts of guns from American cowboys, to Cold War pre ban era stuff, to some more modern stuff. Im picky with newer guns though. Most of my gun collection is WW2 though. My favorites are the m1 carbines.

Slabbed coins are cool and I have one slabbed 10$ Indian, but I like to hold the coins lol. If they’re something special I’d have them slabbed because they should be. I don’t care much for straight up bullion. Not interesting at all like the American currency coins are. So I pay 2100 or less for double eagles right now in San Fransisco where I’m working.

With this particular coin, I wanted to test my abilities on judging whether the coin was genuine or not. It was the right size and weight, so I figured it was gold either way. I bought it from some old guy at a coin show who didn’t have all that much for sale.

Picked this up yesterday. 1914 S. Always fun getting San Fransisco minted coins in San Fransisco!

I’ve added a few carbines since the picture. I still need a standard products though. Most are just mixed post war configuration, but my crown jewel is my rockola. The general consensus was it is a true survivor that hasn’t been through a rebuild.

On the subject of fingerprints on gold. I've not seen one that I recall. Can anyone post one? I'm not sure it's an issue with gold, although it's a good practice of course to hold all coins the same way.

Looks like a partial print on the reverse of this 1898-S Double Eagle. Any thoughts?

    I’m curious if they’re a way to
Remove prints without damaging the coin

I'll leave it to the experts, but I'm going to say NO...unless acetone might remove the residue that constitutes a fingerprint ?

Pure acetone, under a couple of bucks at CVS, will remove a print if it is new(ish). I put every raw coin through an actone bath immediately when I receive as I never know what happened before I got it. Just cheap insurance on mis-handling.

I’ll guess the grade on the Rock-ola at MS64+
