Grade only today; I’ve owned this one for years & never submitted it. The big reveal will be tonight after the Super Bowl.

@winesteven: pics 3&4 are the true views. Today, let’s call them “not so true views”. Way too dark!

MS-66 but CAC will not like the dark area on the reverse at 1 o’ clock near UNUM. I have seen CAC question a much smaller and microscopic stain on the reverse on a PCGS coin graded MS-67 that I own .
I liked my coin enough to keep it despite the CAC rejection. I do not do it that often.

What appears to be (to me) a greased area at 11 o clock does not bother me much at all. But the 1 o’ clock grease and “bump” appears to be much more of an issue.

I think it would grade as 67+, and 68 would not surprise.

Looks like a 66. A little too much going on in the fields for 67 IMO.

Those are not stains as a few opined, those are shiny spots (as made) similar to a proof surface that the camera sees as black. I have a few Lincolns and mercs with that look.

    And… they’re on the reverse.

Wow! If that's a 68 I have one right in front of me that I need to send for grading, mine should be a 69 or 70. ;)

Now I'm not going to go so far as to say that I have a probable 69 or 70, but if that's a 68, I should reevaluate my 43s that I had deemed not high enough potential to have graded. Market grading seems to be moving like the DJIA this afternoon.

Yea, I would have never guessed 68. Lincoln cents are small coins that already come super nice to begin with, and at the 68 level I think it needs to be virtually flawless at the naked eye level.

Compared to many a 67 this is a way better coin, my first instinct was 68 but the horrible TV gave me pause and I hedged down to 67+. In hand I bet that this coin puts the TV to shame, not uncommon recently.

Lots of naysayers & I think that’s perfectly fine. But for a 100% right on comment, refer to @coinbuf. Very well described. He mentions along with his explanation that he owns several Lincolns & Mercs like this. I had a IHC that had this look on half of one of the feathers (#8 as I recall). It looked like black paint, so I dubbed the coin “war paint”. Btw, it still double stickered. While this may diminish the eye appeal for some, the TPG’s don’t consider it grade limiting. It got a 66+RD.

I wasn't downgrading due to black areas in photos.

the obverse has several small marks.

@MsMorrisine: your post inquired as to the rev areas between 11&1. I didn’t see anything about obv marks. Still, appears to be a valid question. I did say the tv was terrible on this one. The coin actually looks like the 1st two pics. It may (emphasize the “may”) be similar to Morgans in that hairlines are much more evident on PL & DMPL examples. In this instance, steel vs. copper. Just a thought.

Since the device is the low point of the die isn’t it possible those little ticks and marks are from imperfections on the planchet?
