Kennedy: a star has some smeared metal

I was wondering what this is (or causes this).

One of my Kennedy proof dollars has a star that looks like it left a trail of metal —

What is this?

It's a spot - staining. There's also a finger print on the left. It's caused by poor QC at the mint.

I cracked it open and took it out, the blob is definitely melted metal, I’m just curious if anyone has seen this before/has any thoughts :)

If it's raised, it's a die chip. Normally it wouldn't add any value but maybe a small premium since it's on a proof.

How did you determine that it's raised metal versus some other crud sitting on the surface?

(Based on your pictures, it's not raised and not metal)

I’ll soak it in acetone over the weekend,

to see what happens but I’m pretty sure it’s metal

There is no melted metal anywhere near the coin presses at the Mint.

Good to soak, then your fingerprint will come off? It's a die chip I suspect.
