Agreed. Looks harshly cleaned, if nothing else.

I’d go with genuine and cleaned but not harshly so.

I could be wrong about either or both.

I was going to bid on it today but after reading the article I decided it looked like to much of a risk for me. That’s why I was asking here. Thanks for all of the thoughts but I stil will pass on this one.

I’m glad to hear that, as I don’t think it’s worth the risk and potential hassle

The reverse looks off to me more than the obverse but the obverse isn't great either.

The back of mercury’s head by the wing is what caught my eye. The coin in the article on counterfeits and the coin on eBay had the same issue.

FWIW, I wouldn't consider buying an iconic coin raw off of eBay. Especially from a seller with less than 99.9% positive rating.

    My first impression was counterfeit.

FYI ,.... We had a dealer pay a customer $2000.00 for mercury dimes that came into his store. This happened in the Western New York area. After the customer left his store he noticed something did not look right.. The dimes Mercury and Barbers turned out to be fake everyone of them. I asked him how could this happen to such a seasoned dealer and collector he said they looked right they looked good. I think what happened was the coins condition were way above average and a good deal was about to be made but in the sellers favor. The FBI and secret service we brought in. Can you believe they are counterfeiting dimes and that is another reason why he may have failed to really look at the coins...

Someone thought it was worth almost 450 bucks!

Someone hadn't heard that "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."
