I lived in Japan for a few years, but I didn't start collecting Japan until I returned home and attended the Dr. Norman Jacobs auction in 2011.
For the Jacobs sale, I decided to try to buy a few nice patterns, partly because I thought they were interesting and partly to keep them all from going back to Asia. I soon realized that I could only buy the small minors due to price, so I lost interest and sold them all in 2022 to fund other things. They didn't do as well as I hoped due to the high USD/JPY exchange rate, but I roughly broke even as a group. (And they probably all went back to Asia.)
Here was my collection. Many of these coins you will never see again. (And sorry for the upside down and mixed obverse/reverse images. Westerners often have trouble with getting that correct.)

Sadly my eyesight has had issues so I'll cheat and use a couple from my PCGS submission from NYINC last year.
A pre-Meiji 'fantasy' which is a word I dislike because it implies a fake or something. In this case, local authority issues.
The label designation: (1601-1870) Koban Zuroku 4-6 Kawachi Fantasy Issue on the label, and I was lucky enough to find a copy of the Zuroku which was a text with a rather extensive listing of the pre-Meiji issues.
And one of a handful of clay 'patterns' (developed as prototypes for clay coins near the end of WWII but not in full production or released, though one type was apparently used in a local area).
And a couple of my favorites...

One more from my former collection that went to @Stork rather than to auction. This is a "bosen" or seed coin that was used to make the molds for making copper cash coins. They can be somewhat likened to patterns. It's rather large at 27.5mm.

Working on a set of commemoratives. These are 67, 66, & 66, respectively. Purchased the toned ones in 2002.

This is the only coin from Japan that I have. I found this in a $2.00 foreign coin bin.
