    When I was a kid back in the sixties I chopped an Indian head cent out of a block of acrylic with a screwdriver and a hammer. When I got to the coin I chopped a nice gash in the rim. Fortunately it was a circulated common date so the loss to the numismatic world due to my youthful ineptitude was minimized. The Dremel was decades away from being invented.

    In most cases, the coins are worth more if they are left in the Lucite paper weight.

    I had a toilet seat once with bunch of silver, used a campfire to melt the lucite off, but it turned the coins black, so not recommended for a good coin. The lucite once it gets going burns really hot!

    When I see these items I look for proof Franklin half dollars (especially a 1959 in DCAM and a 1961 DDR). If I ever had success I would buy the item and then refer to this thread for guidance on how to liberate the coin from the acrylic coffin.

    I have always wondered how the coin or item is suspended when the lucite is poured on it so as not to show how they supported the coin or item during the pouring step? :|
