Oh man, you should have seen my face when I saw that coin, it looks like a baby barfed his carrot and pea mash on it! I’m pretty mad with myself for letting it turn, but just 2 months ago I swear it was blast white. I had no idea it could happen this fast, and as far as I know the cellophane is still sealed. What could have done this?

    Looks like it got wet. Nothing to lose by submerging it in water and seeing if water could get in somewhere.

    Agreed the packaging looks warped from water damage, that is quite the sight.

    Not what I would expect from a mint sealed coin in plastic. Looks like liquid got in there. Ouch.

    So the obvious questions to the OP.... Where did you get the coin? How long have you had the coin? Where was the coin stored and what were the environmental conditions of where the coin was stored?

    Before and after pictures would also have been great! 😂 🤣

    Or, you could throw it onto The Bay, or some other online marketplace- touting its magnificence as a rare and spectacular “monster toner”, and ask some exorbitant amount of money for it. Could be a big payday ahead?

    Might want to check all of your coins and make sure they are in a safe place too.

    I can’t tell if it smells like pee or old paper, I have both a very old cat and a dog that has peeing problems and like to go wherever they want. :D

    The coin was stored in a drawer, so I’m not sure how water got in there. The envelope shows signs of water damage so I think @Batman23 was right.

    Yes, I’ve been there!
    That’s why I mentioned it.

    Cat pee, in addition to being destructive, and smelling nasty, is very sticky to the touch.
    It can be very vile- depending on the cat. I had one cat that used to deliver its contents onto my tools, light stands and even camera bags. The stuff ate up and rusted out the legs of the light stands.
    I was not a happy camper!

    As others have suggested, check and secure your other materials!
    Good luck with those older pets. They need love too of course- along with the supervision and guidance when it comes to their toilet habits. :smile:

    Put coins in a room where the animals cant go because the door is always closed. Cat and dog urine is acidic and will ruin metals like copper or aluminum, A friend had a dog that peed on his outdoor home
    A/C unit and destroyed it.

    So the coin was stored in a draw? The envelope show signs of water but you don't know how the water got there? You're killin' us!

    Go back to that draw in that room and look up........any holes in the roof?

    I had a samoyed growing up. He used to pee on the garage door when he was a puppy. It rusted out. We had to get replace it. He never peed on the new garage door.

    Throw a coin enough times, and suppose one day it lands on its edge.

    I think you misunderstood when they told you some coins could benefit from a dip… they did not mean in a salt tank.

    After some baking soda, boiling water and an electrical toothbrush, I managed to get most of the nasty stuff off. All that’s left is a band of heavy, red tarnish around Ike’s face and some of that same tarnish in the fields on the reverse. Underneath all that gunk the coin had some great luster, and it was stored very well up until the “incident”. :D

    It will join my other pocket pieces in my coat. :)

    So if you sent it to PCGS and they analyzed it with their sniffer, I wonder if the sniffer would reciprocate and also "mark" your coin.
