A few days ago I went to a local auction to bid on a few coin lots. One of them was described as an international coin and currency collection. It contained 15 small plastic bags of world coins weighing, I estimated, about ten pounds. I checked the top few bags and noticed a few silver coins, so I did not remove them all since I was more interested in the other lots.
Bought it for $100, figured I’d at least break even and have fun sorting the coins. I sure did! At the bottom was a bag containing the following-
Sixteen silver dollars, $6.80 in common US silver, and three ounces of world silver coins. Though I only won this lot, it was a very good day.

Now you're thinking about those other lots...
Not really. I looked at all the coins in the other three lots, and they went for more than I would have paid. This was the least important one.
Very nice purchase there.
Silver nearly always brings full value or more at estate auctions but sometimes you catch an audience sleeping or with no interest.

Sometimes the bidders bid every coin in an estate auction to about the same overly high price out of ignorance, say $50 for "junk" silver dollars, but fail to recognize the rare date or gold coin among the lots.
Unbelievable old time priced haul. Even if no VAM or rarities. Postage alone just to ship such lot if winning remotely could get close to $100 with insurance?

Totally agree with you. In my first auction ever, this was advertised along with other common gold coins, but in really low G-VG grades. Another $5. gold coin in good condition (I remember it as an 1880-S), went for crazy money at the time. This one was mainly forgotten. I thought I had it at $100., but the guy wouldn’t quit til $180. Here it is today with the original receipt with juice and tax
