A 25 year hunt is finally over.

After retuning to the hobby as an adult in 1998 I have looked for raw Cameo/DCAM proofs from 1950-1970, including 1957 nickels.
Until yesterday my hunt for 1957 Cameo nickels had been unsuccessful. Yesterday my long hunt finally finished when these two nickels graded (both PF67CAM).

Congratulations. I know you have looked at thousands of sets to find these two.

There are so many rare coins out there from all across all countries and eras. Coins like these are sometimes called "condition rarities" and often in a demeaning way. But the fact is coins have different appearances and these can be much more dramatic than just little differences in dates and mint marks. Finding specimens of many of these "common coins" can be exceedingly challenging, fun, and rewarding.
Congratulations.
I never noticed these were tough but then I just haven't looked at enough sets. I've set aside a few nice proofs of the era but now I know there won't be an nice Cam 1957 nickels among them.
Nice!
Congratulations 🎊

Thanks for your replies.
Of course I could have easily purchased a slabbed 1957 Cameo nickel during the past 25 years; but that would deprive me of the enjoyment I receive from looking for a raw example that I can purchase for modest money and submit for grading [I found both nickels a few months ago within three weeks of each other at a local show and a local shop in a capital holder proof set and in an OGP proof set].
I have no plan for the next 25 years except enjoy the hobby. Participating on the forums adds to my hobby enjoyment.
Congrats! Nothing like seeing a grade you were hoping for drop.

Congrats. Very tough year for cameo nickels - a great accomplishment. Interesting that after 25 years that you were rewarded with two!

My digital cameo album 1950-64 Cameos - take a look!
Out of a mintage of about 1,247,000 1957 proof nickels the PCGS population report shows 180 Cameo coins and 2 DCAM coins.
Both are true condition rarities.
But are they really Cameo??

The second one certainly. Neither has a lot of frost but they do appear to be cameos. The first might just prove that even "Truviews" can be off a bit.
Well done... amazing dedication and coins.

I thought about his post; and respond to it with his own words in a reply he posted to my thread on two 1961 proof half dollars. In that thread.....

The coins are what they are, the pictures are what they are.
The Trueview photos of the two coins are fine, but they do not show the two coins as they really are when viewed in hand under good lighting.
The photos do not show the black and white contrast between the fields and the devices very well. The fields are muted in the photos while in hand they are deep, black and mirrored. The devices in the photos do not show the thick white frost (the frost in the photos has grey in it).
As far as the Cameo designation awarded by PCGS to the two coins goes, in this case I am in full agreement with our host.
Perhaps Maywood will favor us with his own opinion on whether the two coins are really Cameo (based upon his review of the photos only?)
As for my collecting of these Jefferson nickels go, I submitted in 2022 proof nickels from 1939-1964, SMS nickels from 1965-1967 and proof nickels from 1968-1970. For nickels dated 1950-1970 most of those I submitted warrant (IMO) Cameo designations, including many that have toning of some kind (few were completely untoned). For 1965-1970 Cameo designations were awarded. For the 1950-1964 only a couple of Cameo designations were awarded, presumably because of the toning. Since then I submitted additional nickels (mostly untoned) for grading. In a submission currently at our host are multiple 1950-1964 untoned nickels that IMO warrant a Cameo designation. If PCGS agrees that some of these nickels warrant the designation I will be able to upgrade my 1938-1964 proof nickel Registry Set and some of my Proof Registry Sets.
Thanks again for your kind words.
Congrats on the kill, now you will need a new target are you considering business strikes or proofs again?
Beautiful nickels - congrats.

This is great news! A mighty quest has reached its conclusion, yet I am certain more adventures await you. Great work.
Back in the 1980’s my paternal grandfather passed away. He was a very modest Jefferson nickel collector and had amassed a slew of cam Jeffs from this time period. I was very young but I remember his collection fondly. He would show me his purchases and we would spend hours looking at his nickels. He would tell me how difficult they were to find.
He would also tell me the building he worked security in, in NYC, had a very prominent dealer within it and he would get his coins from this guy. To the dealer they had little to no value,
but he swore to me his research showed they were far more rare than people realized.
When he died suddenly, my aunt - my fathers only sibling, heard the news and rushed to his house, broke in the back door, and took all his coins and jewelry. Best as could be determined she sold everything to pawnbrokers for next to nothing. She probably spent the nickels as pocket change. It still breaks my heart as he wanted the coins to go to me, and that HE was THE GUY that opened numismatics for me. It’s not that I didn’t get them, but that his wishes weren’t honored.
Anyways, treasure your pieces my friend. Trust me when I say I know how much you love and appreciate them, just like Poppy did.
Having fun while switching things up and focusing on a next level PCGS slabbed 1950+ type set, while still looking for great examples for the 7070.
The incentive to make a Dcam, being there's quite a jump, $200 to $4000 for a PR67Dcam. I imagine the pops are quite a bit less than what they propose.

Oh, I'm in the market for 2nd example. (hint, hint)
And....all that that was needed for better pics of your nice proofs.......ok, l won't say. 😉
