Flaws that appear to be on the coin are actually on the holder?

Perhaps it was a wildly vivid toner in a 68+ holder, and the person sent it in for conservation to dip off the colors to try for an upgrade to 69, but all the flaws came out instead?
If we are to grade Morgan’s by no better than the reverse, this is a 66
I know who owns the coin, it wasn’t toned.

So what is the consensus on what this should be? I mean I am seeing lots of things that my untrained eye would cause to take this down several notches.
From the cert number linked above it is the real deal. It was also the 148th coin graded in that submission and somebody's eyes were tired.

Probably mechanical error. I’d imagine its selling price to a knowledgeable person will be about where it should be graded. But hopefully someone doesn’t get hosed on it due to negligence or other reasons.

Looks about 65 that tried a little to be PL.
It has too many marks to grade 69.

I don't think it is a labeling error.
I believe in hand this Morgan looked like an MS68 to the NGC graders.
They gave it a plus for the slight PL surfaces.
Some coins don't photograph well. Some do.
Perhaps this coin appeared a bit better than MS67 to the graders and they bumped it up a point.
It's all speculation- my post included, of course- as we don't have this Morgan in hand.
I would expect that any coin graded 68+ would very difficult to find any flaws.
Buy the coin not the holder......

If they wanted to reward the coin for a semi-prooflike appearance, I think they would have used their "Star" designation, rather than add a plus.

If I were in the market for a 68 Morgan, I’d look for one without fingerprints.

I once showed a PCGS label error to a NGC rep who said, "We all make mistakes." There are supposedly 20 of these 1881-S out there.
MS68 coins are not flawless. Morgan dollars especially get a break on how many nicks and scuffs they are allowed compared to other coins. If it were a guess the grade i probably would have said 67+ PL.

Marks, smarks. Some might even say there are hardly any marks visible with even a neutron microscope.
I vote you send it to Legend and ask it to be nicknamed Morgan Casanova. 😈

As a former Senior Grader I can confirm that people do, sometimes, make mistakes.
No way too many visible marks. This is a 65 no better.

So what ever happened to the Morgan Casanova? Is it for sale?
I know who owns it and who sold it. I know the sellers opinions but the buyer is happy with the plastic number. Take it for what it’s worth I suppose.

Per NGC Cert verify - MV $12,000, pop 20/3 higher.
Like it - A really attractive (lots of blast!) super low pop piece. Would be a cornerstone coin for any collection or dealers showcase. Glad to hear the buyer happy.
Lol, it’s ironic that you like this coin at 12k, but if you saw the same exact coin sell for $1000 in a CAC 66+ holder, you would scoff and chalk it up to “rich collectors in a bidding war, wb buried forever” 🤣

What's with all the grey discoloration in the hair? I wouldn't want it even on an MS63 coin. But there appear to be few marks, I'll give it that. Nothing major except on the cheek, if it is one. And maybe SPL.
