    Yep, I was at first excited to see a "half", but see now that thread title was misleading.

    I'm guessing this coin will be net graded given all the hits, but getting some credit for the color. My guess is 53, yet it wouldn't surprise me that it would warrant a details designation if resubmitted for some reason.

    FYI, your coin is the V-5 die pair, based on its date position.
    It is a relatively common die pair for 1840.


    Here is another 1840 V-5 with more widely damaged fields graded AU-58.
    Small marks look huge on a half dime when blown up to fit a monitor.

    Greysheet is $160 and retail (depending on guide) is $208-275. Given the opinions above, does anyone think this coin is worthy of a $1000+ toning premium?

    I would say the toning would qualify as “monster” for a mid 19th century coin.

    The surfaces, however, are a different story.

    I think the grade is a good one. It's a technical 50. I think it's good PCGS laid off the color in the grade, let the market have at that.

    Toning is legit. The photos are warmer under 2700k lighting. Strip it away and will have more silverish centers and concentric rings of color. Somewhat like this:

    Never said juiced. Most lighting is 2700k which adds a warmer glow and reflects in many photos

    Yeah look , it is a good looking coin in hand and the colors really do pop when under any normal standard lighting set up whether there are more blues reds what have you

    I think it looks original and although I am not a huge seated half "Dime" person I do appreciate the rich color and toning color patterns of this particular piece. Again, what is so disappointing would be the fact I spoke with eBay and they admitted the other day they were very wrong in removing me and holding any funds I had. Since making that little complaint, they not only released my funds that were in a 180 day holding and made them available asap. They are considering putting me back on the platform. No interest 180 day free loan for them aint workin for me. I do hope more of these coins do get showed because there is a market not only for CACG but also very very amazing coins that appeal. The worst thing I want to happen is I just hold on to them and people don't get to see them due to me of all ones being the one jerked around. Never once did I take any money, mislead or misrepresent anyone and that is why a site like eBay is starting to see this.

    That's not acceptable. This is not a "dummy" website to work out the kinks. You are actively offering items for sale with incorrect item descriptions with every single post here with the link to your website in your signature (and god knows where else).     I would strongly advise against using AI for your coin descriptions. In the time it takes you to ask chatgpt or whatever, you could have just written up a quick and better description. There is no need to include the silver content, anyone buying these will know what they are made of and it really does not matter since the intrinsic value is such a tiny portion of the numismatic value.

    Double X scratch/graffiti would prevent my buying this coin at pcgs pricing much less the monster pricing. Also, their may be corrosion under the
    M in dime. It might warrant an au condition but with details added. Just an opinion.
