Can machine doubling produce split serifs?

It seems like every cent I look at under a scope has split serifs on the l and I of liberty is this shadows that are being thrown from th magnuscope or just an optical illusion or what? Mostly from like 2015 and newer...

It cannot entirely split and separate serifs.

The illusion probably can be created, but just an illusion. Split serifs are the diagnostic and should be clear enough to make a decision. I’m no expert on more modern coinage, but I would think there must be a definitive diagnostic to have a new doubled die variety.

Because of the changes in coin presses in recent decades actual "machine doubling" has gotten rather scarce on circulation coins. If you are seeing something on almost every coin, it is probably an optical illusion.
