Turner Field, Ballpark in Arlington, now Miller Park? Whatever happened to building things to last?

EstilEstil Posts: 6,863 ✭✭✭✭

So first they get rid of Turner Field after only 19 years, then The Artist Formerly Known As The Ballpark in Arlington after only 24 years, and now The Artist Formerly Known as Miller Park? I mean I remember it opening 2001 and it seemed about as cutting edge as they get (especially the uniquely shaped retractable roof) and now after only 22 years MLB is now telling the Brewers to bring it "up to code" (which will cost about half as much as a new stadium)...or else.

This is absolute ridiculous...what is up with getting rid of stadiums so quickly? Whatever happened to the days when they were easily good for at least 50-60 years (Shibe, Forbes, Griffith, Crosby, Sportsmans, pre-renovation Yankee Stadium), 80 years (Comiskey, Tiger) and of course Fenway/Wrigley still going strong after 110 years! Not to mention golden oldies in college football like Michigan and Harvard just to name a couple.

Turner field was built for the Olympics and then converted for the Braves. They moved for a better park that they could develop real estate around as well. Arlington was actually pretty necessary with the insane field temps well over a 100 degrees making it terrible for players, fans, and umpires.

Basically no one cares about Harvard stadium or Harvard for college football, theyre completely irrelevant in both aspects.

The sooner you get a new stadium the sooner you make more money for the pros and for big time college stadiums.

Brewers arent going anywhere. They're trying to get publicly trying to get tax payer money for upgrades and its not even remotely serious about moving

oh, nothing is built to last anymore. the dryer pooped out last year. I called the repair shop and the tech said that the useful life expectancy on a new dryer is 8 years! 8 years!

guess how old my dryer was? you guessed it, 8 years.

I would absolutely tell that to everyone of them lol. I have no idea what they call it but aside from the national championship the only game that has a chance of being called the game is Army Navy. They're obviously not the best teams but they get their own weekend and the game has more meaning than just the game. Harvard, Yale, that entire conference is just meaningless for college football, theres practice squads in the power 5 that could win that conference. Now if you change it to lacrosse or hockey thats a different story.

As weird as it sounds they got it right and wrong at the same time. The stadium does look nice, its just in the wrong location and the designers didnt account for needing shade in the hot Texas summers. If baseball was played in the winter it would have been fine, or if it had a retractable roof/dome they would still be playing there.

Teams do try and replace the stadiums as often as possible if they arent paying for it. Look at what the Vegas stadium has, or the big renovations Alabama did with boxes that cost millions etc. The luxury boxes are a big part of it but that stadium was fine aside from the heat.

Little side note, Wrigley and Fenway while historic are really not very enjoyable aside from every now and then. The seats are narrow, theres multiple obstructed view seats and so on. While I do think these multibillion dollar leagues should pay for more of it, as a fan new stadiums make it a more enjoyable experience going to games

Nashville will almost certainly be an expansion team. Theres a few ownership groups already lined up and have been for a long time. MLB doesnt want to expand until the As and Rays stadium situation is settled so they dont burn new locations if they cant fix the Rays situation. Unfortunately looks like the As are going to Vegas (that owner doesnt deserve that market) but the Rays are still up in the air. If anyone was going to get relocated to Nashville or elsewhere its going to be the Rays.

It really is pretty crazy when you think about it that Canada has an MLB team but big time baseball states like Tennessee and North Carolina dont

Nashville will get one at one point. North Carolina there really hasnt been any talk of. The two cities that have had the most talk have been Nashville and Portland which makes absolutely no sense to me. Salt Lake City is in the mix as well. Its going to be a decade or so unless they change strategy, but theyve been pretty clear they want to add 2 and with Vegas already getting the As that takes them out of the mix. Charlotte should have one but the Braves block any expansion in the south east. The Braves new ownership does not have the same pull that they used to have so maybe that is possible.

Good thing I still got a nice 2006 CRT TV for a retro video game monitor and consoles (like top loader NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, etc). See if you try to play retro video game consoles on a modern flat panel TV you'll end up with controller input lag (imagine if your car's steering wheel and other controls just don't "feel" or "drive" quite right). And Zapper light gun games are completely out of the question.

That's why I never got into smartphones...from the very start it was just way too confusing trying to figure out which phone is the best and which plan is the best. Plus what is there that can be done on a touch screen phone/tablet that cannot be done on a regular desktop? I just think it's a lot easier to have a nice big 42" screen to work with and have a proper keyboard/mouse!

Nashville and Charlotte both have NFL teams, and there are NBA and NHL teams in those cities. Charlotte has issues with the Braves blocking it, but Nashville seems more like a question of when not if for getting a team. Since you mentioned Kentucky that is another one that should have a team, but the Reds will do there best to block it being so close to Louisville which would be the obvious spot.

Well, I'm a native Californian (San Diego), son of a native Californian (also from San Diego). I left in 1985 when I joined the Air Force. Retired in 2008 in Texas, and stayed. California's government has made it so that there's no way I could possibly afford to go back home (especially as a disabled vet who can't work), short of winning the mega-millions lottery :(

Possibly the prettiest stadium in the country. Cal Memorial Stadium. 100 yrs young this year. Retro fitted for $400+ million to bring it up to code.

I'm not sure the Reds would really have the power to block it, but they would certainly try. That owner is in the doghouse right now for getting caught on video saying they have no chance of winning this year and arent going to try too. The bigger issue with Louisville is they already have a AAA team that would need to get moved, and at least right now their politicians dont really seem to have any interest in trying to get an MLB team or having to build an MLB caliber stadium. Even for the NBA they dont seem to have any interest eventhough the UofL stadium is basically an NBA quality stadium. I think UofL might be playing a big role behind the scenes making sure the city doesnt show any interest in professional sports so they can remain the king of the city

I cant speak on what the owner does or does not deserve off the field, but I can absolutely speak that professionally he does not deserve to get the Vegas market. He is one of if not the cheapest owner in baseball. There are currently multiple players that are making more individually this year than the entire As team does and he just got put back on revenue sharing. Hes made a profit before the season even started and used the team as a piggy bank. Theyve traded away basically every good player theyve had over the last couple years.

The As stadium is a dump for sure, part of it is because of how cheap their owner is not spending on the stadium and the city not being motivated to help a cheap team. Vegas is definitely way better than Oakland and MLB should have a team in Vegas, but a cheap owner that doesnt spend is going to be a massive failure in Vegas. Plus a cheap owner that doesnt spend just shouldnt be rewarded with a premium market either. If theyre content on having a team in Portland put the As there and save Vegas and Nashville for expansion teams.

Fedex is a dump that leaks sewage water more than once. I'll probably get beer bottles thrown at me for saying this, but Fenway is a dump and most of Wrigley is a dump if you ignore the historical aspects of it, Tampas stadium is horrendous. The Vikings old stadium has a roof collapse because they used a tarp as a dome, some teams have had panels fall of of old domes which thankfully missed everyone. The biggest joke might actually be Sofi stadium in LA which has had rain delays before as a stadium with a dome

..... The delay of the game that you sighted, I think it was a Monday night Chargers game(?), had nothing to do with rain....NOTHING..... those storms were LIGHTNING STORMS with very little rain......The concern was that a lightning bolt would hit the roof and cause injuries to the fans...

It was a concern from the planing stages of the stadium.....

    It was GOOD decision.

It was a thunderstorm but everywhere besides the southwest we basically just say its raining lol. It does just humor me though that a stadium with a roof couldnt play during it. I get it that the roof is only there so they could hang the giant scoreboard.

I still think Sofi is one of the worst stadiums and worst game experiences which some of the reasons they dont necessairly control. Not allowing tailgating for the college football national championship game was a joke. Not allowing tailgating alone puts the experience at the bottom of major stadiums. The food is okay at best and other stadiums have better options, that could obviously be fixed with some effort. Its also one of the most expensive stadiums where the food and beer are expensive even by stadium standards

It looks nice, but the stadium experience overall ranks very low which is unusual for such an expensive brand new stadium

I know there are threads about the insane contracts that players are getting. So I think this somewhat ties into that as the owners do the same thing to local governments wanted to be in "better" stadium than competitors. And like the owners with the player contracts, local pols give the owners new taxpayer financing to build new stadiums.

I'm not sure the Reds would really have the power to block it, but they would certainly try.

It's not a matter of blocking anything it's just that an MLB or NFL team is just not a realistic possibility for Louisville because the LOU/LEX area has already been very well covered by the Reds/Bengals (and both the LOU/LEX papers do cover the Reds/Bengals as if they are the local team) for the past several decades. And since basketball has been KY's national, eh...Commonwealth past time for nearly 100 years or so and since Kentucky/Louisville did have a big league team once upon a time (ABA Colonels) and since it just so happens CIN doesn't have an NBA team...well it's quite obvious the only sort of major league team Kentucky has any realistic hope of.
