Only nic-a-date knows for sure. PCGS didn't think the piece has a mintmark. Why would anyone think a reconsideration (at more expense to the collector) is going to result in them changing their mind? It's a curiousity or it's highly likely a 'D'.
Jesus said, "If those who lead you say to you, 'See, the kingdom is in the sky,' then the
birds of the sky will precede you. If they say to you, 'It is in the sea,' then the fish will
precede you. Rather, the kingdom is inside of you, and it is outside of you. When you
come to know yourselves, then you will become known, and you will realize that it is you
who are the sons of the living father. But if you will not know yourselves, you dwell in
poverty and it is you who are that poverty."--- Gospel of Thomas (Lamdin translation)
I see an "S". Despite the wear, you can pick out the serif of the tail in the bottom left of the supposed mintmark. There is a slight yet distinct angle to the straight edge of the serif. The dimple at the top of the letter is present as well. If you look at the mark as a 2D outline instead of the 3D shape we are accustomed to, it becomes more readily identifiable.

Sure has curious wear characteristics in just that one area near where the mintmark would be. Is it just me or does that seem odd to anyone else? Almost like someone deliberately put additional wear on an already worn piece (with a 'D'?).

I still say an S. Cannot see the D at all, but the S stands out to me.

It’s just a “C”, nothing special.

Looks like an S.
Change the photo to gray scale (black and white with different shades).
If you could please.
it's really suspicious that area alone is so worn.
