Are all coins suppose to have a mint mark?
in Q & A Forum
I have several pennies year range 1897, 1918, 1919, 1920, 1926, 1936 thru 1957 and 2 dimes with no mint mark, 1908 no mint mark either. Still have large amount of pennies from the 50's to go through. Is this a common practice a mint would not mark coins?

@Pattyreed36 Welcome, time to study up on why certain US coins minted at the Philadelphia mint did not bear a P mint mark. History brings collecting to life. Good luck.

Time to get a Redbook!
The P for Philadelphia is a relatively new addition.
Thanks for all the suggestions I am researching and appreciate the leads. The more I learn the more I have questions.
I think they started putting a “P” on dimes and up in the 60’s or 70’s. On pennies they only put the “P” on 2017 coins. If your coin doesn’t have a mint mark it was minted in Philadelphia.
Actually, the first year for that was 1980 except for the 1979 SBA dollars.
the mint also used the "P" on the wartime Jefferson Nickels
I laugh each time I check The Bay for prices on Henning nickels. I see all these Nickels being posted as"RARE-NO MINT MARK". DUH - Philly nickels didn't have a P min mark (except for the War Nickels &Henning) until 1968. These sellers are trying to sell a nickel worth less than a buck for Hundreds of Dollars.
USN & USAF retired 1971-1993
