What is a registery set? I don't understand.

I looked it up and don't get it. The PCGS explains 30 something coins... Why, which coins, all the same $ or year? Sorry for the ignorance.

There are all kinds of Registry Sets. Some are denomination(same coins),some are type sets(all different coins).I hope this helps. They are peoples collections.

A registry set is a group of coins either from the same series, or a "type set", "proof set" or "mint set". For example, proof Kennedy half dollars is a set that, when completed, would have one example from each year - in this case, 53 coins.

A type set would consist of different "types" of coins. For example, the modern proof type set is comprised of 33 coins, starting with cents and going through $10 gold commemoratives.

People build sets in PCGS graded coins and the sets are registered online. There are currently over 5000 sets registered.

  • If I were to register a set of Morgan $s would a registery set of morgans be either a set of all years or one year with all gradings, or is it one year wilth all other coins of that year with the equal grading or simply a set of all coins of that year excluding grade? Does the grade have anything to do with it, or is it just the set?

It would be a set with all the years - that's the goal anyway. You don't have to already have all the years. You can start with however many you have and build from there, adding coins as you get them in.

The relevancy of the grades is that it helps determine your ranking in the registry, competition, in other words.

A Morgan set doesn't have to be all the years & mints which would be over 100 coins, some of them not being cheap. There's a set for everybody-4 main sets & 3 sub sets:

    Morgan Dollars, Circulation Strikes (1878-1921)
Morgan Dollars Prooflike, Circulation Strikes (1878-1921)
    Morgan Dollars, Proof (1878-1921)
Morgan Dollars with Branch Mints - Proof (1878-1921)

Carson City Morgan Dollars, Circulation Strikes (1878-1893)
Early S Mint Dollars Short Set, Circulation Strikes (1878-1882)
Morgan Dollar Mintmark Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1878-1921)

Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
