1857 Flying Eagle Cent - Help with Grading

jshaulisjshaulis Posts: 987 ✭✭✭✭✭

I found this coin as a teenager 20-25 years ago. I don't even exactly remember, but remember it being my oldest cent in awesome shape. Fast forward to today and I am just looking through my old coins and ran across this again. Much worse shape than I remembered, but that's OK.

As for grading, I've looked at the photos pcgs provides and guessing it is somewhere between F12-F15, but the more I look, the worse I am thinking. Any advice on what this may grade at?

Thanks, I wasn't sure which angle to go with to give the best chance of accurate review.

Thanks for your input. Where is my best resource to learn when a coin is cleaned vs not?

I'm away from my home office (and coin library) but I believe there's a section in the ANA Grading Standards book that covers cleaning... a bargain at $20!

    https://www.amazon.com/Official-Standards-American-Numismatic-Association/dp/0794838243/ref=sr_1_1?crid=YNF2SXAL3R2M&keywords=ANA+Grading+Guide&qid=1661787578&sprefix=ana+grading+guide,aps,73&sr=8-1

This guide is a good place to start for grading in general, especially with "coin in hand". However, modern numismatics also has to accommodate grading from images. The only useful resource I've found for that is spending time on this Forum and looking at a lot of graded coins.

    Hope this helps! Best, Leo
