Nice Bookmark

I purchased a bunch of old books at an estate sale yesterday and found this inside one of them. I don't know which type the stamp is, but it is my oldest cover to date and going into my collection. Not bad for a $4 book.

    Nice find. The stamp is an 1855 issue and is either Scott 13, 14, 15, or 16. Someone with knowledge of the minor variations in the type will be needed to confirm which Scott number it is. Regardless, it is a valuable stamp. Be sure to leave it on the cover.

    Thank you. I have an old Scott catalog book with pictures of the different types, but a lot of the differences are with the upper portion that is miscut on my stamp. So, I am unable to determine which type it is. I will leave it on the cover, and it has a new home in a postcard holder.

    What amazes me is that it cost ten cents to mail a letter in 1855. In the 1930s, 40s, into the 50s, it cost three cents.

    I'm the 1960s it was five cents.

    Maybe ten cents was the priority express mail rate back then.
