It is interesting to note that the image on the obverse of the Stone Mountain Half Dollar is nothing like what was sculpted on Stone Mountain which is like the medal presented by Goldminers.

The original carving started in 1923 was more like the coin representing the head of General Lee. The sculptor Borglum was fired in 1925, and a new sculptor Augustus Lukeman was selected and completed Lee on an unfinished horse by 1928. The work of Borglum was blasted off the mountain in 1928. The Stone Mtn Association went bankrupt during the Depression and the work was shut down.

The carving was started again in 1964 and Georgia state sold $5 million in bonds to complete the effort. The majority of the work was unveiled in 1970, and US Congress approved this 1970 medal to help fund the Monument. Vice President Spiro Agnew attended the unveiling celebration. The work was fully completed in 1972.

As part of a compromise reached in 2002, the Georgia State General Assembly removed the Confederate battle flag from the state flag, and at the same time mandated by law that the Confederate memorial on Stone Mountain remain untouched.
