Possible Frank Gasparro 1977 Lady Liberty Dollar Pattern strike?

ZoidMeisterZoidMeister Posts: 3,144 ✭✭✭✭✭

I did search the forum before posting this one, but didn't want to resurrect a decade old thread just to post just to ask a question.

I found this recently and picked it up. The 11 sided edge rims look a bit thin, but the diameter and weight match the Cu-Ni tribute coins minted by Jared Grove. This one has a reeded edge.

Anyone know what I might have here? No copy stamp on it and the die polish lines are quite pronounced.

Galvanos were prepared for an 11-sided, 26.5 millimeter diameter Flowing Hair dollar. Gasparro told Coin World's Paul Gilkes that trial strikings of his design were made at the Philadelphia Mint, but all were destroyed soon after.

w/o looking up an authentic one for side-by-side comparison, it has the look of a counterfeit to me.

    Counterfeit is my guess.

Royal Oak Mint were quite concerned with displaying their COPY mark at K7 reverse on this issue

These have been popping up on eBay recently. Quite a few have sold. They look like cheap fakes.

I agree. These show up fairly often and for a number of years now.

You win some, you lose some . . . .

It will be a cheap addition to my pattern tribute set.

Now I need to find a couple of Grove Minting Gasparro silver pieces to complete that set.
