I predicted precisely that amount last week in the previous thread about this. Not necessarily a good sign :#

Would someone characterize the toning as negative/neutral? Just curious why a coin doctor hasn’t processed it in hopes of a bump to 68? Because it is easily recognizable?

I think I’ll pass on this one.

There’s no upside potential and lots of downside potential with such a easily recognized coin.

    Worse....
The image on the GC website is the least life-like available. :'(
The Truview is decent, but too darkish with that orange tinge :s
This image, from the coin's unsuccessful auction appearance at Legend, is very good. A third of a tone brighter nails it. B)
Teeny line on the cheek with an Eschenbach 5X. Not 67+

I've held the coin raw in-hand. It's not gorgeous, but it's lively and very pretty. "A-" eye-appeal. <3

Very big difference in how it looks for sure. Much nicer in the Legend images.

I remember describing this coin and saying this coin is so ms67 worthy- it makes all the ms67's around not ms67 worthy.
    Its just an amazing piece!

Anyone have pictures of the other ms67 that was "fried" and then downgraded to ms65?

I don’t understood Great Collection’s image philosophy when it comes to selling truly spectacular coins, especially a 7 figure one. Treating this like a $100 Morgan makes absolutely no sense to me.

I don't think they should treat any coins the way they do! It's a crapshoot for me but so far so good when I buy....only a few rejects!

I have to wonder about the folks that rave about their pictures. (scratches head emoticon)

Love GC. A video link on some of the iconic material would be appropriate IMO.

They have some great stuff on tonight.

That Morgan is timed pretty good to make 1.7M.

To each his own. That is what makes this a great hobby. I saw it at the ANA and I think it is ugly. For that kind of money I would rather have a very nice 1792 Half Disme, a very nice Chain Cent, a very nice Flowing Hair Dollar and I would still have a big basket of money left over.

See the other thread (likely page 5) for discussion of overly-dark images and images of over-burnt....

I don’t know for sure but I like to think if I played in the deep end of the pool like that coin I could negotiate a flat fee or discounted rate for such transactions.

And not even a couple ‘extra’ images like they do with many other coins…

Still it’s understandable—given the past substantial musings here about the ‘actual’ look of this coin compared to its various pics taken over the years—definitely seems to be one of those chameleons that needs to be seen in-hand to fully appreciate.

The other thread that mostly discussed the current PCGS-67 that is about to sell had some posts about the Norweb-Jack Lee that used to be PCGS-67 before "conserved".

In a Great Collections auction it will all come down to the last 10 seconds. Whoever launches their nuclear bid will do it in the last 10 seconds. I am just sipping some Woodford Reserve and have some popcorn.

And then too maybe they are already "All In".

Well played by bidder #22. Had to swallow hard on his nuclear bid with under ten seconds to go. Surprised bidder 21 did not back up his high position.

You better be buying the Woodford Reserve at Costco. I think they must make it on site

Thanks everyone, and I appreciate the feedback about the images too. We do take videos and send to bidders by request - and we did for this 1893-S. It was a particularly different coin to show in its true light.

I did buy the Woodford at Costco for about $54.00 for a 1.75. But I also like the Black Velvet Reserve at $16.00 for a 1.75 when business is slow. I do collect the Woodford Kentucky Derby bottles. But I can't drink those.

Congratulations, Ian. Also to the consignor and the new owner. This result speaks well for GC's no-auctioneer format.

I hope CoinFacts at least tracks this event even if it doesn't do so for other GC auctions.

It is hard to fathom a condition rarity Morgan going for this (80 percent more than what the Cardinal Half Disme went for, as an example) but it suggests strength and depth of the Morgan market.
