2020 "Covid" Bat

I first saw this very cool error coin or another one struck at the same time over a year ago and have been chasing it ever since.

I finally found one and it's certified by PCGS.

Many think the year 2020 itself is an "error" year. Some think that a bat had something to do with it. Please no politics, it is just a coin.

Your welcome :) Not hating just calling a spade a spade, there are people that want to collect these and that is fine, I do not.

There is a percentage of coin dealers that do indeed think error coins are damaged junk.

Thank you for your ignorance :)

Stick around. Viewing and discussing errors coins is cool, just like viewing and discussing, for example, various plastic TPG slabs.
I prefer errors to plastic slabs, but appreciate both.

EOC is that a strike through? Kind of amazing how it's centered right on the bat's face.

I thought that he was just kidding. Apparently not.

He didn't destroy the thread unless you let him.

It is a neat error and I'm sure that many more here appreciate seeing it than not. And if not, they should just click on by to another thread without comment. That's how most of us behave.

Now, back to your coin. I suspect that it's a struck through error of some sort but what or why am I seeing parallel lines in the field just to the right of the struck through area. They look almost like die scratches.

I personally do not consider a strike through an error. It is a loss of cleanliness (quality control) during the strike.

PCGS our host considers it a mint error.

maybe because it sells labels? lol
at one time they considered the 1999 W $5 and $10 uncirc. AGEs an error.

How about it’s an “error” which occurs during the minting process, which results in “damage” to the coin and such coins are labeled “errors”? Not to mention, even when Mint employees intentionally create such coins, they’re still labeled “errors”.

Are not all coins that leave the mint that do not conform to the coin's normal appearance a mint error? The TPGs do not always assign a blanket "error" to the coin label. Some are specifically called out on the label without the use of "error."

Can we see this coin "in" the slab please. Yes, I'd love to see a W on the other side as well!

Hey Fred- Can I get an honest answer or explanation for something please. I'm sure you have already addressed this here somewhere. I just haven't been able to find it. Can you please give us your "explanation", personal and professional opinion of the Nail/Dime?

    Congrats on your retirement BTW!

BTW EOC, You should have left "COVID" out of it.. Just sayin'

Interesting. So it seems the foreign object was stuck to the die.

  • Options
    sellitstoresellitstore Posts: 3,079 ✭✭✭✭✭

And it spread out wider with each consecutive strike while continuing to stick to the die. And it must have been pretty hard-steel scrap/debris of some kind?

The cents, dimes, and state quarters struck on nails at the Mint were all done on purpose obviously – they were not made in the normal course of the minting process -someoneStuck a nail in the press and struck them.

    Thanks for the feedback.

Sorry, one more question. So if that's the case and it was intentional (which I also believe is true), then why would PCGS label it an error?

Gotcha. I have a W that appears to have the V75 "struck through". Ok if I PM you some pics tomorrow for your opinion?
