After many many years of collecting I've gone back to old school. Everyone has their own ideas as to how to display and houses their collection.
I have tried several ways over the years. And from time to time tried another way to enjoy and display your coins.
I am not advocating putting gem specimens in albums, but I am enjoying being able to page through an album and viewing the coins.
As well my Dansco albums ive been again putting together album's that are vf-63 in condition depending on the series.... but for some reason I have really enjoyed in repositioning the collection that is much easier to maintain, and store.
This has also allowed myself to decide if certain items may not fit the collection, and can be sold /traded for items that are needed to fill a hole,or upgrade a coin.
And again everyone has their prefered method of housing their coins. Everyones collections are different. So that said only you can determine the best way to keep your collection in a mannor that works for you.

  • I still also use in my collection... slabs, both TPG/self slabed, 2x2 flips, and 2x2 cardboard , kointains, capital plastic holders, airtights, and albums.
I just found that I enjoy paging through my albums and enjoying the coins together on the pages.

These books aren't easy to find. When you use any books of this type the chances of scratching the coins with the slides is great. The press in Whitman folders will take pristine coins and produce ugly toning over time.

I get what you're saying about building a set you can view though. I've got a couple in Capitol plastic. I think they're attractive and easy to add to if you don't use every screw until it's filled.

If you do what you always did, you get what you always got.

I have a bunch of Wayne Raymond and Meghrig pages and albums. I bought a whole bunch of them either on eBay or from that site that still is selling unused old stock back in 2005 and 2006. I have several of them filled and also a whole big box of ones I haven’t used yet.

By the way, that site selling unused stock still offers several of them http://www.meghrigsupplies.com/WAYTERAYMONDSTYLEBOARDS.html

Here’s some quick pics of one of the albums. Only this is actually Mrs_Spud’s set. It took her about 10 years to complete and was completed about 8 years ago. Only these pictures don’t show how colorful some of them actually are so I’m posting her favorite toned one to show it’s color.

Here’s her favorite toner from the set

And here’s the whole album. There is a duplicate 1895 P in the 1895 O slot, she has the O in an Anacs slab.

I agree. I understand there are tens of thousands of current collections in albums where the owners derive tremendous pleasure from being able to physically and literally hold history in their hands. For coins where it doesn’t matter if they get scratched or incur other accidental handling damage, albums are great, and is a GREAT way to display a collection.

But as @DollarAfterDollar correctly says, accidental damage can occur. While not perfect, there is an alternative, and that’s a “Digital” album. It’s a nice alternative, and perfectly safe. While the example of one of mine shown below contains high grade coins, please don’t allow that to distract you from my point. A Digital album works just as well for lower priced coins that you care enough about to not allow those coins to get accidentally scratched or incur other accidental damage.

I don’t recommend putting proof coins in an album, but they are great for Circulated coins and you can put uncirculated ones in them too without damaging them if you are very careful when you need to remove the slides. I like collecting uncirculated coins in 2x2s until I have most of a set completed and then put them in the album carefully all at once rather than adding them one at a time. It limits having to remove the slides too much. And then when I do either add a new coin that I didn’t have or for an upgrade, I do it very carefully. I wear nitrile gloves, carefully push each coin down gently in the rows before moving the slides out, add the new coin(s) and then carefully put the slide back in. So far I haven’t made slide marks on any that I’m aware of.

But I also love making digital albums of my slabbed coins. I haven’t ever cracked a slabbed coin out and put it in an album. I also don’t like to fool around much with my slabbed coins. I treat them very carefully to avoid scratching the slabs and also try my best to protect them from humidity and heat. Pretty much I like to take pictures of the slabbed coins and then keep them safe in the bank safety deposit box in intercept slab boxes with desiccant in the SDB. Then I can look at the pictures of the slabbed ones anytime I want to without worrying that they will get damaged or stolen. And then when I want to look at actual coins, I have my raw ones in the albums.
