Collecting Coins in Vintage PCGS Holders

PCGS_SocialMediaPCGS_SocialMedia Posts: 327 ✭✭✭✭✭

In recent years, there has been a marked increase in the number of collectors who specifically seek coins that were graded by PCGS many years ago and remain in those vintage holders.

Collectors have plenty of options, too, whether seeking a PCGS-graded coin in a first-generation “Rattler” from the 1980s, pursuing one in a PCGS “OGH” (that’s shorthand for “old green holder” as used in the 1990s), or angling for a PCGS coin in a vintage holder of newer origins. The possibilities are truly endless when it comes to building an excellent collection of PCGS-graded coins in the holders of yesteryear, and all it takes is determination and a little imagination to kick off an outstanding collection.

There’s good and bad in the strategy of targeting old holders. Many of the best coins for the grade have already been re-submitted so there are fewer out there. The coin surfaces are more stable in the sense that if something was going to turn it probably did turn and is more evident now.

When they come in OGH with great surfaces and no problems for the grade, get em. jom's CC half eagle is the perfect AU example, hard to find better and in the classic holder even better. As are the others above............

From 2007-2014 I built a compete 144- coin classic silver commemorative set in rattlers.

Quite the challenge. The 1838-D Arkansas and Alabama 2x2 were among the rarest in rattlers.

I prefer PCGS as a company with their standards, consistency and plastic optics, I prefer the look of early NGC holders especially considering the discount they used to bring.

Speaking of which, I am hoping more are out there, but this is the only silver 1960’s era Washington I have ever seen in a rattler.

Thanks for posting this - didn't know that Greg collected this sort of thing - looking forward to chatting with him at the next major show!

I enjoy looking for old pop reports. Anyone know why these went for so much??

Do not know either but I like collecting old PCGS and NGC pop reports too The are sitting in my temporary storage unit since my wife kicked them out of the house.

I have noticed increasing interest in these really old pop reports. _

It would have been nice to cover Doily and Regency holders. I didn't see either mentioned.

As I remember, one of them was the September 1989 report, which would have (as close as anyone can be) the final and complete tally of the population of rattlers.
Also I think another was the October 1989 report, from which the population of doilys could be deduced.

I was teamed up with a rattler collector friend and was the underbidder.

For those of us who like TrueViews for our coins, it is a nice PCGS service that allows for a TrueView through the holder without 'cracking' the coin from its old holder.

I have never seen a 1960's MS Washington rattler before, yours may be unique. Literally unique. Why would anyone pay to have pocket change professionally graded when the demand for grading services were so great the people paid great premiums just for the privilege to get their rare stuff graded and entombed.
Rattler proof 1960's Washingtons are difficult enough, I just finished my set earlier this year.

Any MS coins post 1964 are so scarce as to be essentially uncollectable, which makes this MS Jefferson set posted by @toyz4geo a few years ago so impressive, most are population 1 in any grade.

bonus I picked up a while back the only 1970's Washington that I have ever seen.

Exactly. Grading one would have made no sense. Thank goodness for the nut who got this graded. I owe him/her a drink.

I can sort of understand no reference to Regency holders as there are so few and most are the Danny Kaye foreign coins, but a nod to Doily's would have been nice.

  • This seems like a good threat to post my most recent addition to my odd holder collection. This one is still a mystery to me.

  • Here’s another project.

The early Pop reports are dated the 1st of the month, so you have to look at the next month to get the total for the previous month.

I've read multiple dates for the crossover from rattlers - September, October, could have been as late as early November 1989 by some accounts...

So I've always assumed the December 1 1989 pop report is the first one where you can be certain that all rattlers are included.

I started a PCGS generation holder project a couple of years ago. Put it on pause to pursue some other projects. Here are the first 10 different holders I started with.

Here’s an 1884 Morgan rattler grading set I’m working on. I bought the MS60 CAC first, and since my grandfather was born in 1884 I decided to try for a complete set.
