    I have some Roman coins with round holes in the middle. what does it mean?

    I don't think anyone knows for sure about this punch marks on the provincial coins. My suspicion is that they were meant to differentiate the provincial coinage from that of an official Roman mint.

    There are some theories about them being centering dimples, as one can find examples struck with the same dies, and showing the hole in a different place from an example to another. I'm pretty sure FAC has threads on the subject

    The dimples are probably related to a production issue that has been lost to history.
