Ebay Sellers, If you make offers and counteroffers watch your sales price

amwldcoinamwldcoin Posts: 11,269 ✭✭✭✭✭

This has happened to me before. A buyer made me an offer and I counteroffered. The buyer was able to buy it for $25.00 less than my counteroffer! I called ebay immediately. Their 1st response was contact the buyer and see if he would send the extra $25.00 to me through paypal! Then said if not cancel and relist with the correct price. I told the lady that is a lot of work for $25.00! In the past ebay covered the difference. Well...I supposedly have a $25.00 coupon coming!

I have no idea but it has happened before. Ebay could even see in my messages my counteroffer was $25.00 more than they allowed the sale for. They have sent it to tech.

After thinking about the last 3 comments I will no longer make PSA's! You skeptics can just learn on your own!

We're trying to figure out how that could happen. We asked for details. It's not about skepticism. It's about trying to figure out how that could even happen. I mean, I've never had it happen, so it can't be common. There must be something that triggers it.

It must be some sort of relatively uncommon eBay glitch.

I found two mentions of it happening in this thread:

Is it possible (I'm going to get yelled at) that there was an auto-accept on the listing that the second counter-offer from the buyer hit?

It is possible (only the OP can tell us for sure). I would think the OP would remember adding that and doubt it would just appear. I have seen eBay default to adding best offer on some listings when relisting but not sure I have seen an auto accept number added by default (meaning the person listing would have to knowingly enter it).

I am thinking the seller set a minimum for automatically accepting an offer and intended it to be an auto-reject threshold. But would think this could not happen with a counter-offer.

I could guess because it's happened to me. Hypothetically speaking...
    List a coin for $1,000
    Reject all offers below $800
    Accept any offer above $900

    Offeree $875
    Countered at $925
    Offeree accepts $925 counter
But listing says any offer at $900 takes it.

It happened to me years ago and I had a really wierd amount designated for acceptance. IIRC, like $387.65 or some such. Guy hit it on the head. I asked him how he figured it out. He just smiled.

    Have a nice day

I took offense because you are acting like I am some dumb Oggie from Muscogee even though I have been a seller since 1998 and in excess of $1,000,000 in sales in the last 6-8 years.

There is nothing to add. The ebay system reduced the price. I never have auto reject or accept in my listings. If someone was to persistently make me lowball offers I would auto reject with the block bidder(which I haven't done yet).

Why do you think ebay reimbursed me the difference? Because it was cut and dry it was an issue with the ebay system and the rep reported it to the tech staff.

I've only done a million in sales over the last 8 years. However, I've never had that happen. So it isn't common and something must trigger it.

No one blamed you or called you a dumb "Oggie".

Instead of trying a goading replying to all, I do this zero error thing all the time. I did put too may 000's on it and it is now corrected. For some reason a million doesn't look like a million without those 3 extra 0's! Just looks so small, which it is compared to 40 years ago! Perhaps it's my evil twin in the back of my mind wishing my checking account had that many 0's in my balance! >:)

When a buyer enters a best offer, if below seller threshold, you will be prompted to increase bid, you then keep increasing until you hit seller min down to the penny.

You can go by incremenets to zero in on seller's minimum - I do this often on rare world issues to see how low seller is willing to go.

Rare world coins on the bay are generally wildly overpriced.

I agree and feel the same.

$1,000,000 just doesn't look like that big a number anymore. Seeing a trillion numerically so often can do that to you.

I'm old enough to remember when a $20 was a big bill too. 😊

    That's right, Jm.

I was referring to how the little text under your offer as you are typing it in reacts.

Go to an offer page and low ball it by half.

Just type the numbers and don't hit return.

The text INCREASE YOUR OFFER should be there. (if not, buy that coin. Lol.)

Then low ball it by $1 and the words INCREASE YOUR OFFER disappear.

This is the method I use to test bids without submitting them.

When drastically low balling you can divide the difference and work your way towards the seller's lowest acceptable offer without submitting bids.

It works like 3% or 5% of the time, but have got some great deals by doing this.

Or at least avoided serious gouging.

Last I saw it was 5 (increased from 3 within the last few years). But I guess someone that is dedicated could open multiple accounts and keep trying.

    Interesting.

I had always thought there was some way in bay dynamics they could chisel it down to lowest offer one would expect.

Example - your trying get double bubble (keystone markup) on item you have $100 in. It could be some super pickup of yours - single digit pop item, some super toner you picked up, original mint set toning, one side PL, super PQ++ etc.

Set bin to $250 and min offer you auto accept to $200. Ignore any memos trying talk you down unless want reply β€œunless bin / make offer item already at our best price / auto Messg 6901.” The ones where they just buy it now make my day.

I don't think you're seeing what you think you're seeing. I don't have an auto-accept figure on any of my listings, and they behave just as you have described. What is happening is that eBay is calculating average sales prices for similar items and using that figure as a likely price the seller would accept.

Some of which are crazy high and some crazy low. I see it a lot with world coins where I have say a nice BU and most sales are for say G-F.

I sell world coins, and I hear you there. I'll get an offer of $15 on occasion for a $75 coin with a comment like "Another just sold on eBay for $20", when the other is a ratty VF and mine is choice BU.
